All Things ENGL!

I've completely sworn of EL84 amps after two Mark V:25s. I really liked it and the tone is there and it records well, but there's no oomph and power behind it. Sounds very anaemic.

I do have a Victory Kraken, and that thing sounds freaking monstrous. A great 5150 voiced amp.

Used to have a Fireball 100 and a Savage 120. But these days, I'm down to just an E530 and a E840. That totally scratches the Engl itch for me.

I heard you guys like the Savage? Check my Savage NAM profiles featuring the Original Engl Savage 60 E630. How not to love this Amp? It does Clean, it does crunch, it does fat Rhythm, Tight High Gain and full balls out brutal destruction!
Have fun and feel free to suggest some settings, deviations or Bands/Songs for inspiration.

Find my personal settings here.

This is everything that sounded good to me.

Bought this beauty a while ago.
Had to have it restored but it's like new again.

One channel goes to the capture X the other to a marshall se100 into a vintage marshall cab with black backs ;)

Sounds amazing.

What’s happened lately with Engl amps? Are you guys still smitten with the preamp? Any new GASsing going on or have you gotten rid of any amps? I sifted through the thread after it popped up in a search result while researching amps…

I’m still rocking my FB25 when I can through the pretty large 1x12 V30 Engl cab I’ve got! Lately I’ve rethought my use of an EQ in the loop after seeing a vid of Nolly talking about how he approaches EQ’ing and walking through the updates to the EQ in his Archetype plugin. Obviously different amps than in the plugin but it really came alive by aping this! I’m still cutting a bit around 250hz, but then boosting some choice mid-high freqs just a smidge. Still trying to dial in good Q values but it certainly woke up the amp for me and moves it away from sounding dark. Also gives some extra sparkle to the clean channel which I’m not complaining about.

Would be nice with a 2x12 or 4x12 cab with a Powerball II on top, but that will have to be in the distant future.

I settled on the E530 Preamp. Just really dumb for me to keep collecting big, dumb amps that
are as fitting in this day and age as Wreck-It Ralph walking around the streets of New York City. :idk

Still fun looking, though... as I continue to be amazed that as you become
more and more of an old man all the merchandise you are attracted
to is pretty much off limits. :hugitoutAnd I sure as fuck don't want to be the
creppy old guy trying to stay 25 wearing bedazzled jeans and shooting
up the T-therapy to stay virile and active.

No offense to those who do, though.

I am scared to go with a kiler preamp like the 530 or the 570 because then I will need a great rack power amp and then I will be a rack whore.

One of my favourite YouTubers. In my favourite music store. Demoing amps from my favourite amp brand.

That was very interesting! Great concept to try to show the different base sounds of the amps. Also cool that there’s now a 4x12 with Karnivores, didn’t know that. Plus, that music store looks awesome!

I have a clearer picture of the SE FE now, and my drooling has basically stopped completely. Compared to the others it mostly sounded too muted to me as I’d like a fair bit of grind available.

Seems like I’m right on the money for my tastes with the Fireball. I do like the Blackmoore/Savage rawness but I don’t think I can really pull it off with my playing. All captures I’ve tried has made me go back to the FB in some way and now I’m starting to see why. Having a PB mk2 with four channels is still very enticing but I’d need at least a 2x12 which I can’t find room for in my current living situation.

It’s also very clear how much of a difference it makes if you can A/B the amps yourself physically in a room. Might be going to Germany this year, so a visit to Musik Produktiv might not be impossible.

Hard to tell if it's the cab making things sound weird but lots of them have a really nasal pokey quality here. Blackmore sounds pretty cool and more open than the others. Fireball was OK.

Video was somewhat pointless because he didnt touch any settings, and Im sure I'd be dialling each amp quite differently (especially with all the controls ENGL amps typically have).

I’ve understood it as the Karnivore speaker has a slightly different honk than V30’s.

The video gave me some value in understanding the difference in voicings. Yes they aren’t dialed in as I’d like but since the tone stack is close to middle I got anodes of the differences between amps. And like I wrote also now know I need to be able to try them at the same time to really get an understanding.

It did sound boring but IMO some of that was the Karnivore, I think it needs other speakers to sound good to my ears, and the rest is he had zero settings dialed in. Lead 1 is more in the Savage/Fireball grind sound to me and there are 5 buttons on all channels that can make it sound so much different. I get it he wasn't doing a deep dive into all the sounds they can do but it's like our other thread on here of all dials at noon should all amps sound good there?

Getting the SE FE was the finishing blow on my amp stack and my drooling has stopped too but because I feel like my stack is now everything for me.

:rofl

I am in a different headspace right now, but the E530 is killer, and I am not sure I
could do without the split Mids on it. Having this lower Mids and upper Mids
differentiated like that is so useful.
:chef

I still like to look, but I don't think I can get a better option for me than the E530. :idk

The E530 preamp is awesome, but I still think that the alleged distinction between lower and upper mids is misleading. On closer look, it turns out that the treble control is actually intended to emulate the presence control of a power amp, and the control for the upper mids is simply the actual treble control.
