I had a little free time yesterday and decided to record an original Americana-style clip with my 50 Watt Fillmore and PRS DGT.

I also did a little background with the Mark VII clean channel, spiced with a little vibe early in the song. I pull it out of the mix when the organ comes in. I had it in the whole track, but it became too cluttered.

The instruments are piano, real human being drummer, bass, organ, the DGT.

For the melody I played into a 50 Watt Fillmore set to the 'Drive' channel (the mid-gain channel). The pedals are an older gold-colored Suhr Koji Comp compressor, and some H9 delay run into the front of the amp. I added a slight touch of Harrison/SSL delay in the mix just because I wanted to hear a little more than I recorded with, but didn't want to re-record the entire part! Call me lazy.

I didn't use any reverb for the mix on guitars, there was a little reverb on in the amps.

I don't usually like a compressor to record guitar parts, but for some reason I felt like kicking it on yesterday, and set it for very gentle compression to give the amplitude peaks a haircut.

The speaker cabinet is a Mesa 4x10 loaded with Celestion 10" ceramic Creams, standard issue for Mesa these days. The brief Mk VII track was done with the Vertical Mesa Split 2x12, into Celestion Alnico Cream 90s.

The drums were cut remotely at a very nice studio in Austin, TX, and the engineer nailed a great sound. I'd definitely recommend him if anyone needs a studio there. Everything else, for better or worse, is me. :rofl

Note: The original link kept playing a test mix, I just deleted the entire older link and replaced it with a different link today (Sunday, March 22).

Nice! Really digging the drum sound. Instantly made me think of "You Don't Know How it Feels" for tone and playing. Which is great in my book!

Loving the guitar tone too, has a nice vocal quality to it, almost Knopfler-esque. :grin

Glad you liked the tones!

The drum sound is literally what the engineer sent me from raw tracks, processed with a touch of SSL's 4000E channel strip to roll off the high frequencies of the cymbals, and SSL Drumstrip to polish things up. The Bus compressor was SSL as well. I'm digging their plugins.

I did some dynamics processing on the guitar track with the 4000E, and used the SSL Guitarstrip to polish it. Then used another SSL bus compressor.

On the mix, there's the Harrison tape machine running best quality, 15 ips, for a bit of glue.

I just replaced the track I originally linked - the software on my site kept running a test mix even though I linked the final one. I just deleted the entire track and created a new one with the correct mix. I hope you heard the right one!

Not that it's hugely different, simply a better mix.
