Exactly. This is my case. For me, it's pure joy to play the music of my favourite artist.

I understand the arguments against tribute bands, too. I don't agree with them in most cases, but I can understand them.
 
For a lot of us life just happens and we change our plans.

In college I still dreamed of signing a record deal in an originals band. We knew other bands that were getting deals. Even the best local bands that got to a major label affiliate never went anywhere though. We were really close to that level but our lead singer and songwriter had a kid and then that dream kind of died.

Got close with another band but it fizzled out too. By then I had a 9-5 job and a lease and a puppy and stopped chasing the big dream. I kept looking for bands but everyone wanted to do tons of live shows and van tours. Shortly after that my girlfriend got pregnant and then I basically quit all music for several years.

Two more kids later and there’s literally no time to even keep the house reasonably clean let alone find a band with regular practices and gigs.

I ended up getting into recreational sports. One night a week to sneak out of the house for a few hours after the kids are in bed to get some exercise and socialize. It’s way easier.

But yeah I mostly play along with songs for fun or tinker with gear. Even that has slowed down a lot as my job gets more intensive and kids have more stuff going on.

During my working-musician days, tribute bands were not so much a thing. There were Elvis impersonators - some of those guys paid their sidemen more than Elvis' sidemen were paid - and Vegas-type show bands would occasionally do tribute sets, but the cloned, look-alike/act-alike/sound-alike kind of act was rare, if any actually existed. FWIW, my musical interests and preferences are far too broad for that. While I've had "favorite" artists/groups for (usually short) periods of time, I've never liked 100% of anyone's material. When I played full time, even playing songs I liked a lot would get old, and I preferred rotating them out of - and later back into - our setlists for that reason. I cannot imagine ever wanting to play one band's songs - and trying to perfectly duplicate specific recordings of those songs, something the original artists almost never do - exclusively.

Yeah, I can understand that. I also think that cloning an artist or band can many times be weird. Even ridiculous. A few times I guess it can be very well done and end up being almost natural.

Copying arrangements, tones, specific recordings and whatnot... Well, I guess it's dependant on the tributed artist. In our case, it's Mike Oldfield. It's such a niche target, because he had (he's retired now) a very personal way of playing guitar, and his compositions could go from poppiest song ever (such as Moonlight shadow) to very personal or intrincate ones (Incantations is madness...). Also he made very different arrangements live vs albums. With this in mind, Oldfield fans usually want to see that guitar style, as a priority. So We only went ahead with the band because We have a guitarist who nails that playing. It was the right decision... Now this guy is very well regarded, and Oldfield has hired him for his official band (yes, he's retired, but has touring official band). So I guess having a guy who plays almost exactly like you didn't went weird in this case.

But yeah, I don't like Tribute bands where the disguise to look like original artists and whatnot. Except for shows like Queen, where wearing the yellow jacket is almost a must. In general, I find it edging the ridiculous.

So I am more or less divided. But in general, I say yes to tribute bands... But not always.
 
I would love to play in a tribute band assuming I didn't have to pretend to look like the original member.

Actually I think it'd be a lot of fun to be in a "serial tribute" band that learned different sets of different bands. So one gig you could do Weezer covers and another you're doing Green Day, etc.

The first gigging cover band I joined was when I was 16 or 17, with a bunch of dudes in their 40's and 50's. I was supposed to be temporary while they found an adult but I played with them for a year or two before they retired. I was a bit way too cocksure for my age and experience, but after the 2nd or 3rd month with them I said I wasn't playing "Mustang Sally" unless someone requested it and learned two lessons at once with that one-

-Don't make demands/stipulations/ultimatums like a little bitch, ever, but especially when you still have peach fuzz on your balls. Figuratively and literally.

-People really fucking do request "Mustang Sally"

While I might occasionally haul a Super Reverb around, there is no fucking way I am showing up to a gig with a hottub unless I have a bunch of roadies!!!

Absolutely. That's what I was trying to achieve with my previous band.

We knew several Iron Maiden and AC/CD songs and few Whitesnake ones. With a little effort and lot of fun we could have prepared 3 mini tributes and start from there.

My idea idea was to do "tribute nights" with a set list that had the tribute section placed in the second half of the setlist, plus an opening song or two to set the night mood and few snippets throughout the first half of the night.

I think is also a good way to sell your show to the same venues.

Playing only one band's music for an entire gig would not be my jam. Even if I loved every one of their tunes (I never do), I'd get sick of the same shit over and over.

That's a completely different kettle of fish. A good cover band could easily aggregate tunes by a given band together and perform sets or parts of sets with "tributes."
