24fret guitars advantages/ disadvantages

I don't really mind the visualization, but it does make more sense compared to 21/22.

I don't like single coils in the neck, most tend to sound anemic. Humbuckers are cool, but not like on LP's or SG's. Being back a bit they get a bit more attack, makes things clearer especially with higher gain, more shred oriented tones.

The position of the neck pickup on an SG is identical to a 24fret guitar.

I prefer 24 fret guitars. The additional two notes are (occasionally) useful if you want to transpose a part up an octave and the extra space is nice even when playing lower notes. I used to buy into the notion that a neck pickup would sound bad on a 24 fret instrument but then I played some and it was a non-issue. Five of my ten electric guitars are 24 fret instruments.

Didn't know that! Now I understand why I could use more gain on it compared to LPs without it getting muddy. Never had both with exactly the same pickup, so I always attributed that to pickups, or just thought it was an "SG thing". Also never really had an SG with the same pickups as a 24 fret shredder to compare 😆. Will factor that in from now on.

I prefer the sound of a neck pickup on a 21 or 22 fret guitar.

That said, I don’t know how PRS did it, but the Vintage Bass sounds great in the neck position of my CE-24. Perhaps they tuned the resonant peak to give it a 22 fret-esque sound? :idk

I just can’t get over the way the neck pickup sounds on a 24 fret guitar. My ear is just tuned to the way it sounds with the placement on a 21/22 fret guitar. It’s a shame, because functionally I like the 24 fret better for the full two octaves.

So you hate the SG then?

I have two PRS Custom 24’s and a Charvel DK with 24 frets, all of my other guitars are generally 22 fretters. I don’t have a problem going back and forth but it may take a few minutes to adjust, especially going from a Strat to the PRS. One benefit I like is playing slide on a 24 fret PRS, it’s much easier and more comfortable to play higher up on the neck.

I have five 24 fret guitars, six 22 fret and one 21 fret guitars with different fretboard radius, fret wire types and I love'em all, each make play and sound different.
