This is from a live performance at a regional university here in Japan. I sat in with a trio as part of a lecture and demonstration on Romany Jazz in a course on “Music and Migration.” The tune is the jazz standard “Out of Nowhere” done in a Romany Jazz style. The trio is one of only a few groups doing Romany Jazz (aka “Gypsy Jazz”) in Japan. Audience is around 200 students.

I’d been playing this song in jam sessions for some time, which is where I met these musicians, but this is the first time doing it in a Romany Jazz style. The trio also did several other Romany Jazz staple songs.

The guitar is my custom 2002 Taylor 712CE with a cedar top and rosewood body, fitted with a K&K Pure Mini and strung up with a set of Thomastik-Infeld Plectrums, played through a Fishman Loudbox Mini set flat.

I hope you enjoy. Thank you for listening!
