What Guitar Are You Playing At This Very Moment...

57 Custom reissue just has a bark. Like a giant heavy SG with that solid 1-piece ‘hog body.

I had Area T's in there for a while. Then Fender Noiseless. Now the EMGs. :grin I may go back eventually. :rofl
But there's just something about EMG singles and being tuned to D standard! Secret recipe. :knit

You ever use any Virtual Vintage Heavy Blues, FA? The DP409s? I just had a friend sell me a
loaded Strat guard loaded with them. No idea what to expect. I guess Vintage Heavy Blues.

I do use a Heavy blues 2 in the bridge position of my yellow strat. Love it. Virtual 54 in the neck and Injector in the middle. :chef

Just put this down to take a break. It's a 1970s Gretsch "Super Axe" that I picked up in Tokyo last year. I've been playing it on and off over the past several months, alternating it with an archtop, but I decided to put the archtop down for the next several months and use this more regularly. Mostly, I play at open jam sessions (blues, bossa, funk, jazz), and occasional combo gig and solo guitar set.

I was attracted to this guitar because of the onboard effectors. It has a compressor and a phaser, both powered by a 9V battery. I've also added one of those original 1970s Mutron Dan Armstrong effectors, in this case the Blue Clipper, to put a little more tonal variety at my fingertips. As far as I can tell, the Blue Clipper is basically a fuzz with the kind of circuit that is responsive to the volume knob, although the compressor is a variable that I'm hope to better understand. For jams, getting on and off stage quickly as a courtesy to others is important, and I'm also a little clumsy with pedals on the floor, so I thought this would be a good option to mess around in conjunction with this guitar.

I also have a few others of the this types of effectors. In addition to the Blue Clipper, I also have the Green Ringer and the Orange Squeezer from the original Mutron and two others, a Red Ranger and a Purple Peaker. To the best of my knowledge, the latter two have the same innards as the Mutron series, but the cases are different. Of course, there are also clones of these effectors but maybe they didn't catch on much because it was awkward to chain them. I think some players put the innards inside their guitars, or into pedal enclosures, but I like the idea of using them as intended.

I was traveling abroad for most of February with only a travel guitar, and before that played a lot on the archtop. I'm a part time "amateur" player (in the sense of Merrifield "the pleasure of doing what you love") and it take me a while to switch guitars. So I decided to take a break from playing out in March to play the Gretsch at home. In April, I hope to get back to the jams and the occasional gigs.
