I took my balaguer espada to rehearsal last night and really dug it. Probably playing it at our show next week. The neck is very fender ish which I love and is what I started on.

Been playing this no frills travel guitar lately that I’ll be bringing on an upcoming trip. I’d used several over the years, but most had the barrel tuners that I couldn’t get along with, or they were too heavy or too long.

This one has the usual tuners, is super light and fits easily in an overhead flight bin. Very simple design without any knobs, just with a standard output jack. When needed, I can plug it into a tiny USB charge amp that has switchable clean, overdrive and echo. It’s fitted with a mandolin strap and clip tuner, and It all sits nicely into a basic carry bag.

I’ll use it mostly as a couch guitar to work on getting more fluent with a few old jazz standards that I’ve taken to lately, including “Like Someone in Love” and “On the Sunny Side of the Street.” The fluency I’m aiming for is being able to play the melody all over the neck, along with chords and shells, and effortlessly switch among them. The way I’ve found to get there is by repetition. If I can get that done on this three weeks trip, I’ll call them at jazz jam sessions once I’m back, to work on developing improvisation in live settings to keep eyes and ears open.
