What Guitar Are You Playing At This Very Moment...

The Mrs. just snapped this on her smart phone, playing on my 2002 Taylor 712CE.

My go to impromptu couch guitar, it has a cedar top and rosewood body. I opted for a cutaway, with no onboard electronics. Later I installed a K&K Pure Mini, but these days I’m playing it mostly unplugged. It recently had a fret job and the luthier set it up for Thomastik-Infeld Plectrums, 11 gauge.

I had been playing “Yesterday,” which I’m adding to my “Beatles Suite” for a solo live set in September. I‘ve transposed it to G, to make use of open strings moving between G major and E minor. At the moment of this snap I was fingering an Em9, with the F# on 2 and alternating between a G and an open E on 1. I like working in minor seconds to my solo arrangements and in this case also adding a G on 3 and an E on 6 (no 4, 5) for “the man I used to be” phrase of melody. I don’t sing, so the challenge is to stick close to the melody with variations and registers in rendering this for instrumental solo guitar.

Once I integrate this tune into the full suite, which also includes “Blackbird” and “Free as a Bird” and 2 other tunes, I’ll work out the arrangement on electric with pedals to rehearse the set, but that’s another story.
