What Guitar Are You Playing At This Very Moment...

A 96’ Orville, Gibson’s MIJ offering. They made them in a few different plants but this one came from Fujigen.

(only pic I have with the headstock is this one)

Easily my best sounding humbucker guitar. Last time my uncle was over I had him going through all my guitars to check them out, as he was putting this one around his neck he asked “So which one is your best sounding one?” ::strums and A chord:: “OH! IT’S THIS ONE!!! I already know!!!” It just sounds huge, the sustain is ridiculous. At some point I’ll get it refretted with some med/jumbos as the tiny frets aren’t my thing.

It’s a Fotoflame, so once it cracks, if it ever does, I’m going to send it to MJT and have them turn it into a goldtop.

What pickups are in it?

What pickups are in it?

Bridge pickup is the Suhr Aldrich and the neck pickup is stock. I want to say they used actual Gibson pickups in these but I can’t remember for sure. That might have been Orville By Gibson. I’m most likely going to put another Aldrich in the neck, they’re a little too imbalanced right now. But I’m also nervous about changing anything because in the middle position I get that cool out of phase sound, despite everything being wired in properly.

I know what you mean. I've still got the stock pickups in my tokai and a drawer full of really nice pickups which FOMO makes me want to try but it sounds so good as it is I'm scared to mess about with it.

Hahaha I got a scratchy pot in it, sometimes I need to turn the volume knob a few times to get them full signal out, but I don’t want to fuck with it in case it’s lending itself somehow to the sound of the guitar!

I know it’s a stupid thought and I’m going to change it all eventually, but man, if something changes the sound of that guitar I’ll be massively bummed out. I’m pretty certain it’s just the right wood/setup/pickup choice for what I want to do with it, but there’s still a teeny amount of superstition in there.

I totally get that.

I have heard tales fraught with woe and misery where some chap wanted to improve a great guitar,
changed something, then went back to how it was originally, but the apple cart was already upset and
it was never the same. :(

Or we all just weird as F!

And the 100% this post deserves.

@DrewJD82 we need a combo laugh and 100% reaction.

This all 100 hundo and triggers me

Shit I accidentally swapped merely string gauge on my ce24 a few months back and it was awful and I was terrified I would never recapture the magic of that guitar even after switching back

Fortunately crisis mode was averted going back to 10s lol

I have had guitars knocked over by band members catching cables with their feet, or
just bumping into a cab or stand the guitar was resting on. I hgave watched more than
one Axe go face first and not be able to stop it---even as it happened in slow motion.

I am such a stalwart for the sanctity of axes that I see I need to start yet another chapter for
"The People For The Ethical Treatment Of Guitars."

It was a 30 second photo op papa szum gonna make me cry now

Haha! I am not important enough to make anyone cry. :beer

Your poor guitar, on the other hand.

You don't like it, do you??

Years ago I had Derek Trucks Sig SG that I loved, and it took a dinger when the singer
in our band got overexuberant messing around on a break and yanked it straight off
its stand and onto the garage floor. I saw it happen and couldn't stop it. It was brutal,
and when he is an ass to anyone in the band I remind him of that moment. :hmm

Miraculously the guitar was fine, except for one dinger on the edge of the headstock. :idk

I had to end up selling the guitar, because it was never the same in my eyes. :(

I have seen so many guitars over the years take tumbles that I am OCD about how
they are handled. Even if they are not my guitars. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Make sure not to leave them out in the cold overnight, or in a hot locked car during the
day, too.
