What does your “real” rig do that your modeler can’t do?

Hahah I just wanted to be able to step up through dirt from clean to modded Marshall, while having an EJ and a Gilmour option on the board. The Fuzz Face threw a hitch into the hole thing that I'm still sorting out. But there's so many variations of edge of breakup and dirt pedals that all worked really well for what I wanted to do that it was hard to figure out what areas they didn't do well and most of that was in how they stacked with other pedals.

I love a good Fuzz Face, I even tattoo'd my whole face with one.
But when I used one live I always ran it first after guitar and maybe drop in a TS9 after it. But I like wah and vibe first so that doesn't work well with a FF unless you have a buffer option which sacrifices its boldness. In those cases I would just settle on the BK tube driver to fill the role of a FF. But it has the advantages of also being a great overdrive with a different midrange punch, and it sounds fat with a wah too.

That reminds me, I don’t know why but for some reason it seems like I need less to get all the gain options I need with analog gear.

I used to set up 3-4 amp channels and 3-4 drives in my Fractal; the show I just did I got it all done with a Lightspeed + Klone and didn’t feel like I was missing anything.

Other side of this. Fired up my Multiwatt and my pedalboard and dialed in the Godsmack goods (apology to the universe of good taste #2) there in a microsecond. SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO satisfying and I am betting in a live setting; HO-LY-FUCK

Seriously, though. Everything is a trade-off, and I know you know this. I am so over parsing
the differences and then making up some sort of method whereby I (c)rank this over that
and that over this. It's all good, to me. It just rests on each of us individually to find out what actually
is good for us, specifically, in the moment---relative to the setting and circumstances we are working with.

Now excuse me while I go hold my "artificial" and "fake" rigs and reassure them that they
matter, too.





Edit: Pretty sure someone already said much of this. But hey, life is just endless repetition, with slight
variations on a theme.

Also, I do think different rigs tickle different areas of our aural and tactile senses. Or kind of feels like it.

I vividly remember opening my rack up a day or two later after gigs at my home or rehearsal pad, and the stale smell of smoke from the club would just come wafting out. Good times, that part I don't miss.

I vividly remember opening my rack up a day or two later after gigs at my home or rehearsal pad, and the stale smell of smoke from the club would just come wafting out. Good times, that part I don't miss.

That happened a little while before I started gigging so I'd never experienced the joy of indoor smoke until we played a venue in Houston around 2015. Seeing grey liquid ooze from my hair as I washed it the next day and having the van reek for the rest of the tour still gives me nightmares.

Yeah, that brings back memories. We used to play Fri night and Sat night at these places so we’d leave all of our gear set up in between.

I remember coming in Saturday night and having to blow the layer of ash off of my amp.

In 2026 this is literally the only true advantage, in my opinion of course.

I have not played many digital devices however. Had a Kemper and an AX8. All the same BUT I hear tonex and QC are getting there.

Sad to say but there may be a day where digital is advanced enough to feel and sound exactly like a tube amp. Plus you can still use tube power with them, that defeats the purpose for me but for arguments sake.

I am definitely watching the QC mini. Trying to hold out for the $999 sale lol

Doing my small recordings at home, I don't think I would commit to using a digital device over a miced up tube amp. The technology has come a real long way, but with a tube amp, there is "analog magic" (I know this suggestion might generate criticism, but it's the same as using emulations of real gear on my UAD interface versus actual hardware) that gives the tone sparkle and depth and space and sonics that I couldn't get out of the digital black boxes I've owned.
