So my Crab Dragon started going up and down a bit in volume and I took it to my tech. Was pretty sure it was a tube issue, but wanted him to check it out thoroughly. Ended up replacing all of the preamp tubes with JJ EC83 tubes and power tubes with 6L6. He did some thorough burn in testing and I got it back yesterday. Significantly more punch and clarity with the new tubes. Really digging the sounds even more now.
In reality, beyond providing input (send) and output (return) level controls, it adds 2 tube gain stages and some EQ that help me abuse the phase inverter for glorious saturation and added harmonic content.
It definitely colors the sound and is by no means transparent. I love the control it delivers for the KK 50's unbuffered fx loop, and I am addicted to the extra mojo it brings to both the "clean" plexi channel and the yeti style lead channel.
