What Amp Are You Playing Today?

Finally got around to setting up the Recto cab with ye ole Recto. What an absolute monster combination. Tons of solid low end out of this rig.

was just assaulting my diminutive reeves c10hg into the high gain input and chugging  that thing is hilarious and amazing. the most fun ten watts ever.

Took apart the Brownface Pro today, replaced the electrolytic caps and the leaky Astron film caps (10 out of 11 were bad, as were all of the cathode bypass caps!). I can’t believe how well it worked before but now it is much better. It’s brighter, louder with more gain, and the vibrato is much stronger.

Got it all back together and moved into the family room. Let’s see how long the wife puts up with that! :rofl

well today i set about to fix this thing as the clean channel.. the raison d'etre for a gigantically overpowered fender solid state amp.. was glitching out.

so i ganked it from the chassis and started tapping crap. i hit a 4uF capacitor and heard POFFFF and next thing bZzzzzzzzzzzz. hrm. so i wagged it.... felt loose, and now it was humming non stop. sigh.. i knew what was next, and it was liberating the board.. so all the knobs and jacks off.. labeled all the wires, yanked those.. pulled all the heat sink screws.

found the cap for the main opamp's power supply was cold soldered- so reflowed it and quiet as a tomb and reliable again! good lord this amp was loud before and i swear it got even clearer and louder after a thorough going over, pot and jack cleaning, and reseating of everything.

so i hadda play it for a LONG time. i know folks dont think too much about these amps- but man, given good speakers... its a brutally loud high headroom SOB, cheap, and save for a 25 year old fabrication error, reliable as hell! and it sounds like a fender should! with a bouncy fet dirt pedal out front like a sweet honey or an ocd on.. its really fun to play!

Those were great solid state amps. I am surprised they haven’t gotten more popular with so many people playing pedals into a clean amp as they do that very well.

Love that Strat pairing with this amp. 62 reissue or something else?

yknow- i cant disagree at all! i think i paid $90 for it almost ten years ago and i never dont like it. i even like the dirt channel, which is kinda perfectly imperfect in its own weird way. it sounds super classic into a celestion 412 or like a twin into evms, and sounds amazing into an altec 417.

it replaced my frontman 25r, which id still love to replace!

Sorta! It is officially a 1988 MIJ Standard, but it was built with all parts from the MIJ ‘62 reissue except for the original pickup's. The current set of pickups are Duncan Antiquities which are based off slightly hotter 62 pups so I guess it at least has a strong 62 vibe.
