We need to talk about V and X shape guitars!

I am completely enamored with the Snow Falcon and try to keep my eye on Reverb for one reasonably priced. One day, it will be mine.

If I ever see one of these I'm going to buy the shit out of it. I have no clue why, but I fucking love this body shape. The fact that it has a Wizard III just puts it over the edge. I strongly prefer that over the OG Wizard.

I'd have no prob with any of the finishes they put out, either-

The LTD Arrow is hands down my fave V shape. But always feel like Im gonna damage it while playing.

And where’s the Explorer thread?

I’m usually on the hunt for these. The white looks so good, I should’ve got that from my Ibanez rep when I had the chance. The mars shadow on the other hand is rarer than hens teeth, which makes me want it even more.

I keep saying if Ibanez make me a custom or signature, I’ll use this shape as a template.

Speaking of X shapes in 2011…

The falchion was the guitar that got away for me. I got the Glaive first from my rep, then Halberd at GC Hollywood (which also had a second that I regret not getting). I should’ve got the falchion but opted out, and now regret to this day and it’s been various missed opportunities ever since.

Well, now I've done it. One ESP/LTD KH-V Red Sparkle coming up!

Thomann had a great sale on these as the model seems to be discontinued. I was planning to buy one, but it was right before my trip to Copenhagen. I feared Thomann would ship it, and it would arrive right when I'm abroad and the Finnish post office would fuck me over by wanting to deliver it, and then return it to Thomann instead of being sensible and allowing it to be delivered when I'm back. So I thought "Maybe I'll order it a few days before my trip, then it will take enough time to ship that I get back". Except by then it was sold out.

But as luck would have it, it seems they've gotten some back in stock so I just ordered one. Cost me 100 € more than the sale price, but still a very good price for the specs. I scoured a lot of other options and none of them were even close to this one's specs at Thomann's price.

When I tried the KH-V, my only real complaint was that the neck is on the thin side, but I think I can live with that if it doesn't cause cramping like my old original Ibanez Wizard neck on a RG550 did.

If I've learned anything, it's that the available V options are surprisingly bad. It's one of these:
  1. Right specs, wrong finish (Solar, Jackson, ESP/LTD). You can buy a boring black V any day of the week, but if you want something cooler, tough luck - shop at the right time.
  2. "This model was made only one year in this spec/finish" type stuff.
  3. Really expensive for the cool stuff. Jackson custom shop, MIJ ESPs and the like.
  4. Crap headstock. I don't know what e.g Schecter is thinking with their headstock choice, and wtf Jackson keeps putting reverse headstocks on so many models. V/X style guitars are the type where aesthetics matter more than most!
  5. Smaller custom brands with a year long waiting list. Kiiras Instruments here in Finland makes some awesome looking Vs.
  6. Literally the only 7-string multiscale V seems to be the Ormsby Metal V, which is impossible to find with a headstock since it was made like that as a single run apparently. The headless version looks wrong to me, and most of the finish choices are not great.

Im not always a fan of gold hardware, but it works on that so well - CONGRATS!

We played with Burden of the Wretched last night and both their guitar players had Jackson Vs with gorgeous quilt tops. Vs just look so sweet on stage.

I love flamboyant finishes, but gold hardware definitely needs the right finish to look good.

I think the KH-V has a bunch of interesting details that I didn't even think of initially.
  • The string ferrule holes are arranged in a pattern that mirrors the body shape. None of the other fixed bridge ESP Vs do this but just use a V pattern.
  • Top pickguard instead of back routing for electronics like on other ESP Vs. I like the pickguard as it adds another point of interest.
  • The inlay style. Fangs? Great waves? Anyway, I don't think any other ESP has these.
  • The only LTD model with a physical LTD logo?
  • The way they've chosen even gold screws for the pickups.
  • The pickup surrounds seem to be meant to mirror the inlays and neck binding.
The vibe is a lot more like a bling version of the old Jackson RR that Hammett plays live for Sad But True. A bit more proper signature guitar than "slap my name on something" stuff.

That's what mine will be, in tribute to the first guitar I ever got, which is the exact year/model as the one sitting in the corner! Cadillac Pink, to be specific.
Mine was Hot Pink! :rofl
It was one of my early guitars too that I traded my Kramer for, but we ended up traded back a year or so later.
