Uni-Vibe

I have a few coming and would like to read your experience with univibes in general.
I think I am more into a gentle wobble than a throbbing or overly swishy sounds.

How do you like your vibe and what vibe pedals do you have or had in your collection?

I used to have this Fulltone Deja Vibe and I LOVED it! It was an amazing pedal. I mostly used it for slow swirl and gentle warble, but some of the more intense settings were also great

I have a JHS Unicorn V2. It's pretty good sounding, but for some reason this pedal (not just mine, the entirety of the JHS Unicorn V2 pedals!) seem to have a flaw with the bypass LED whereby it shorts itself to ground for some reason and doesn't work. But apart from that the pedal itself is pretty good. It does get a bit lost when used with slightly higher gain tones, but otherwise I can't fault it much tonally.

I have an Axiom Effects OV-1. I really like how you can adjust the lamp age and bias. Looks like he updated it to add a resonance control for the OV-2.

It’s a one-man shop and his PAE-2 pretty much takes all his time. So an Omega Vibe may be pretty hard to get these days.

I have the big white Fulltone dejavibe MDV-1 and a Lovepedal Vibronaut photocell, along with everything in Helix.

The Fulltone delivers everything I want from a vibe tonally. Unfortunately it’s a real pain in the ass on a pedalboard being big, heavy, and power hungry. The latest custom shop model overcomes some of these issues and has tempted me to downsize. Probably worth a look. It’s especially amazing through a dirty Marshall. It breathes like it’s alive, especially cool with some volume but it does a thing in the room.

I’ve not found home on the Lovepedal yet. It has big shoes to fill competing against the dejavibe. I’ve yet to open it up and play with the bias on the photocell to see if I can dial it in.

I just picked up a Voodoo Labs Micro Vibe yesterday. So far I’m really happy. I had the MXR Univibe (“psuedovibe”) before but I wanted something with a real photocell. It doesn’t have vibrato mode but that sound doesn’t really appeal to me anyway. The Micro Vibe has a fuller sound to my ears then some of the others I compared clips to which I like. It will hold me over until I can spring for a Vibemachine.

My first was a Dunlop Uni-vibe about 25yrs ago. I ended up trading it for something else. Second was in a Hardwire TR-7. For being digital, it's very good and chewy. Still have it. Third was another digital one from the TC Viscous Vibe. Not bad, but not great either. Still useable though. Last one I got was the Fulltone MDV-3. The best by far. I do like the vibe in HX too so I guess that counts.

Harmonic tremolo?

What is it about the Strat single coil neck sound? It's heavenly!
Definitely. And then flip it to the bridge pickup for a biting solo, that pretty much covers it for me. I could do without positions 2,3,4 on a strat…sometimes I’ll use the middle pickup, but not for long, and occasionally I’ll try the out of phase positions just to remind myself that I don’t like them.

Had a Voodoo Lab Micro Vibe for years and was fine but was a bit bass heavy.
Then used the Helix vibe model from 2018 to last year. Sounded good.

Now I have the MXR Uni-Vibe and I like it more than the previous ones. I know it doesn't have a photo cell but I don't care, I care only if I like it or not.

I mostly use vibes at slowish speed and pretty high depth, always in front of amps/dirt never with clean sounds.

Sounds like we took the exact opposite paths 😂 I also run it up front only before dirt - it has to become part of the dirty sound for me, more like a wah that way.

yeah I use is more like an "auto wah" too, to add some chewy movement on lead parts or big chords. I love it, my favourite modulation for sure.
