I used to think tonewood matters in a solid body guitar, until I saw the construction of a Chinese made "Hamer". Under the pretty top was a material that resembled dried chocolate mousse. Most likely sawdust, dye and glue.
I put some American made boutique pickups in it and it sounds about as good as my R9 or CS9, or my korina SG.
