Tips for creating IRs from plugins or other digital sources?

I have some dialed in cab sims in plugins that I’d really like to get onto my Nano Cortex and I’m getting really fucking frustrated. I obviously don’t know enough and I’ve spent too much time already not getting anywhere.

Could anyone point me to resources, videos or guides on how to do this?

I use Logic Pro, can’t understand how to use Impulse Response Utility for this. I managed to make a 1 sample track of white noise with the utility signal generator and put it through a plugin. Then exported 40ms of it to wav format but the result was super quiet and had no bass.

Also tried https://29a.ch/impulse-response-creator/ but the resulting file crashes plugins and is obviously not the right length since I don’t have correct settings…

Anyone willing to help me understand what to do? Thanks for reading!

Get spectrum thief from ghost note audio. It’s free

In logic set the noise generator utility to white noise. Run it into just a plain cab sim (no amp). Then use spectrum thief to capture it. Super easy, and he has videos on how to do it.

I’ve used it with two notes genome to capture irs of their dynirs

Do you have to have logic ?
Asking for a friend. lol

Thank you! Looks like exactly what I need! Trying to search for this stuff (or use Artificial Unintelligence) has taken hours from my life I’ll never get back, haha. I’ll try it out as soon as I can!

A follow up on this: used Spectrum Thief and after understanding the UI (affordances were terrible in some places) and setting it to Normalize mode I got my IRs sorted! Super happy with the whole procedure, and the video on the plugins download page walks you through it. I’ll try with a sine sweep as well later on but white noise worked well to my ears.

I started using spectrum thief a while back and it is great.

The best method I found was to send a Dirac file through the chosen ir loader (in my case two notes).

I tried using a white noise generator but it didn’t sound as good compared to using a Dirac file.

Sine wave didn’t work at all.

If you’re still experimenting with plugins for sweeps, some other free options are Wave Arts IR Capture and Voxengo Deconvolver.

I use Voxengo out of habit. The Wave Arts plugin is much simpler to use. The trick with the sine sweep method is to have a tail after the length of the sweep. For example, I leave 0.5sec on the tail of a 10sec sweep, which results in a 500ms long IR. If you make the wet file the same length as the sweep, it won’t work.

Sounds like something I should check out! How would one go about to get a Dirac file? My ”google-fu” is obviously subpar…

The Wave Arts plugin work on Mac, so added to the list to check out. Thanks for the tips!

I’ve used the Wave Arts IR tool to clone DynaCabs for use with other modelers. It works very well.

I always do a control test by capturing something like a York of OwnHammer IR first. I load the original IR and the clone into Room EQ Wizard. If the two lines land on top of each other, I know my setup is good. Then I get to cloning DynaCabs or what have you.

There is a folder you can download which contains them - I thinks this is where I got them from.
Jus load the sample in you daw (not at bar one as there maybe some fade in that your daw does)
Route the track with the sample to the track where your irloader and spectrum thief is.
Play the track while Spectrem thief is active and it will capture.

The biggest difference I saw between this method and white noise was in the low end and it seemed clearer to my ears as well.
