A lot of it sits in the wattage. I had a 15W Ampeg GVT head for a few years, and it was fun in the living room, but stunk with a drummer. Not a fan of the small mini tube heads that use EL84s. The Mini Rectifier is one of them. All the fizz, none of the bass.
I should have kept it longer and given it more of a fair shake. I kept reading about them and one popped up locally for cheap so I gave it a shot. I thought it was very nice, but not enough for me to keep it. I recently played the BC Artist for a bit and thought that sounded pretty decent too.It definitely opened up with a clean boost or a TS9. Later on I'd run it thrown an oversized 1x12 cab loaded with an EVM12S. That was another improvement imo, at least for how I play.
Price, I would assume. I have a '66 Thomas Organ / Vox Cambridge Reverb tube version. I've seen the solid state versions go for about 1/5th the priceThough none have truly succeeded in this quest; why someone would actually buy a fake tube amp that doesn't sound like it's supposed to, when anyone can just go out and buy a real tube amp that sounds exactly like it's supposed to, is something I've never understood.
One day maybe someone can explain this to me, but some 60 years after the solid state Vox amps were introduced, I've tried a lot of SS amps designed to sound tube-like and remain unconvinced.
I don't know whether the Jazz Chorus was built to sound like a tube amp; if it was, it failed.
But it's a very good solid state amp that succeeds on its own terms as a solid state amp.
Agreed, My only exception is the OR-15H. Pretty impressive low end, although nothing like a 30 watt+ amp.Not a fan of the small mini tube heads that use EL84s. The Mini Rectifier is one of them. All the fizz, none of the bass.
I'm borrowing a mini Katana from a friend right now, it sucks ass!!One of those super tiny Boss Katanas. Good thing I got it for free.
I think I was able to convince him of something else. We produced new NAM profiles together and it seems to work for him. Sometimes you just need a different point of view.Laney Ironheart.
Considering the price?
The Bogner 20th anniversary Shiva; I thought that thing sounded generic as hell
(...) Bogner Shiva (worst sounding expensive one)
Didnt like the crunch, not meant for high gain and would prefer some other amp for clean tones. Maybe we didnt crank the volume enough until it rips our ears, maybe the greenbacks loaded cab wasnt a good fit or maybe the tubes were old... in the end i just couldnt get any good sound out of it. Luckily it wasnt mine. (...)
