The Official Original Artificial Intelligence We're All F***ing Doomed Thread

The difference is that it took *way* longer for the transition. That's incredibly important. Same with the horsesmith analogy. Yes, they were replaced by modern tech, but it took 1-2 generations, so people had time to adjust. Not so with AI.

Same thing, the transition to MIDI, full digital, plugins and what not took a lot more time than AI to happen.

I completely disagree. If anything, the human voice is the most intimate thing we can use to make music. Any of these tools completely sends that down the shitter.
And yes, I hate Autotune almost as much.

I heard some stuff. Not saying anything else anymore.

Of course it's not better. But that's full stop whataboutism.
As I said it was clear it was coming. Thinking musicians get a pass makes no sense.

What surprised me was how quickly it went from “it’ll be a while til it’s useable” to “well it’ll make folks redundant”.

But it’s not like it got there without reason.
Which is where the singing stuff comes in.
Look at modern productions, nothing intimate or individualistic about the voice.
And no it ain’t whatsbouism, it’s audiences, attention span and what can be sold to them.

Plus the handwringing “I spent years honing my art” for 3 chord tunes that are not even craft.

Where is the communal aspect of singing. It’s alive and well in 3rd world villages.

Yet folks act like having spent money at their hobby should negate others from expressing themself.
Punk happened for that very reason.

As I said it had to happen.

Via Suno?!? That's pathetic.
Via any form. But feel free to rip singing out of context to make your non existent point.
I don’t care if some one sings a vocal line into generative AI, and have a fun time pass.

What’s pathetic about it? That there’s no actual skill involved?

Like the bar is that high with where Ableton and “producers” making “beats” got things.

What does it hurt you or I if they do.
Unless we’re talking about environmental impact.
Which I don’t think we are.

I find tribute bands pathetic, guess what so I’ll ignore it. And let them do their thing.

But for every guy on some kinda moral high horse I can likely show you someone not having spend FA on union dues.
In Germany the Culture and Creative Industry are the 2nd largest after automotive.

So, there’s your answer why it had to happen. Because there’s money to be had.
No different than gaming or porn.

And let’s just stay with legal stuff.
Morals always get trampled by make more money faster.

So where does acceptable end, and not acceptable begin. and more importantly who determines it?

To be fair, reaching the point of a person with absolutely 0°K skills "making" music with AI, while technically harmless for humans, is certainly worrying for anyone who cares about art.

On the other hand, there's already tons of talentless people making crap music and earning good money from it, so things will only get worse.

while technically harmless for humans

It's anything but technically harmless. Do you know how much energy and water is wasted for all that AI slop? And did you monitor the prices for GPUs (partially CPUs as well), RAM and SSDs recently? I bought 4 2TB SSDs not even a year ago, they're twice as much today. It's super ridiculous and 100% because of all that AI bullshit.

Your last paragraph. That is very much my point.

Yes let’s have a knitting circle with Greta Thunberg. Not shy I go b to a Guitar forum.

It's absolutely how this works. AI is an incredible threat to all kinds of ressources. But hey, more power to you if you think that's fine and dandy.
So you wanna debate the environmental ramifications of it.
If hazard a guess that generative AI for music is the lesser issue of what AI will be.

But that whole thing is a political discussion which I won’t even have with my GF.
Have fun clowning around on your high horse.

Absolutely. Just as much as I want to debate the ethical aspects. And no, it's not political, it's an exersize in humanity and all things culture, more or less (at least on a bigger scale).
