Who uses this technique? I like it for everything, not just metal tones. It works for everything. I’m a firm believer that metal advances all recording techniques.
Fredman is 55°. I’m not familiar with caveman.I used the "Caveman" technique. Which is two mics, each off axis at 45 degrees to control the phase relationship.
It really takes and fizz away and makes the 57 sound so much better.I picked up a "Fredman clip" off Amazon years ago.
It makes for a cool blended mic sound in your DAW.

Tried it on Vintage 30s, greenback G12-Ms, G12-T75s, G12-K85s and even Seventy-80s.I bought a clip with the 55 degree angle from Friedman Digital last year. It makes the setup of SM57s easy. I don’t set it up often though. I mainly use a single mic.
I’ve only used it on a V30 with my 6505, but will try it out with a Multiwatt Recto if it gets to me in one piece.
Do you guys think it translates well to speakers other than V30s?
I don’t mic cabs anymore, but some of my favorite IRs are captured with that mic orientation.Who uses this technique? I like it for everything, not just metal tones. It works for everything. I’m a firm believer that metal advances all recording techniques.
I have some Ownhammer IRs with Fredman applied. They are my go to.I don’t mic cabs anymore, but some of my favorite IRs are captured with that mic orientation.
That’s what i wasn’t saying though. It kind of is. I’ve yet to find a situation where it doesn’t work well. I guess I just prefer it. Admittedly, I’ve not gone down the endless microphone trail. I’m completely happy with two SM57s.It’s cool, but as with most things that are given a name like this, it’s no silver bullet. …
Kind of how I feel with combining a 57 and 421 (or any other mics or speakers etc. Ultimately I think it just gives you something to determine “is this better or worse?” which can be helpful, but there’s many ways to skin that catThat’s what i wasn’t saying though. I do kinda want a nice ribbon mic though.
