Grilled onions, bacon and thin tomato slices. American cheese.
This is pretty much the ultimate grilled cheese for me and was a hangover staple, along with a bowl of tomato bisque, for a few years.

Exactly this. It's tough to beat that.Sometimes I think the ultimate Grilled Cheese is a Kraft Single in between
2 pieces of cheap-ass White Bread, slathered with craptastic Margarine like
dumb-ass Country Crock.
I've tried it every which way imaginable and the simplest is often the best.
