TGF "Do Something Challenge"
Season 8 - Week 8
TheGearForum_DoSomethingChallenge_S8W8_2025Jan05.jpg

Season 8 Week 7 leaps over the finish line with 11 submits for this week, a > 50% increase from last week! Thanks to new participants HomespunEffects and Stone for hopping on the Do Something Train!! Great to have you on board!!! Shout out to continuing participants Aleksi, Alex Kenivel, FuzzyAce and Whizzinby for keepin' the Challenge train rolling with their fantastic contributions!!!

Time to play a little Crazy 8's! Season 8 Week 8 ends on the 8th! We talkin' some Crazy 8's Peoplez ;~)) How's that for numerololic (my official word creation for special numerical moments)? I hope we can all kick one in this week grab that brass ring ;~)) Getting VERY close to being able to break the record (brass ring) for submits in a "Do Something Challenge" season. 134 new pieces of music so far in Season 8 of the Do Something Challenge, so congrats to us all for kickin' out the jams! We now only need 20 entries to tie the previous Challenge Season record and 21 new entries to set a new record ;~)) With 20 participants this season, that means just one from each of us and we have tied the record (and shattered the previous record holders "per participant" number which was previously 5.70 and we are at 6.7 so far this season)!!! And we still have the rest of this week to make that happen (submits will end at 11:59pm HT on March 08, 2025)!! Let's break that record and make it all our own!!! Keep in mind as well, this is the last week of the season, so after March 8, there will likely not be another challenge for 6-8 weeks or so, so get 'er done!

Still have not heard hide nor hair from the Champ (PLX)! If anyone knows that he is OK, please PM me ;~))

Here is a print screen of the spreadsheet through S8W7:

Looking forward to seeing > numbers for the Crazy 8's and a new record being set ;~)) Great work so far everyone! Remember to put your tags (#cover-song, #original-song, #hot-noodle or #collab) in your submission posts. It helps me to do checks on the number of submits. If you see any mistakes in the numbers, do let me know and I will correct as quickly as I can!

Now deal those cards and jam that game, on Crazy 8's the music train! Rock it peeps!!

#original-song

I decided to try making unboxing videos and recording a short original tune featuring whatever I unboxed! The video is just a way to deliver the music. This is Strymon Magneto: a eurorack delay module that's a bit like the Volante but way cooler.

I'm fully aware of how silly it is to put a thing you own back into the box and then taking it out of said box in front of a camera. But I'm sure I've done something even dumber in public before :idk

#original-song

In the spirit of doing something, I'm going to post this. This is my first try at "hypnotic techno" inspired by a recent video on the subject by Thomann. I'm not entirely happy with how it turned out. There's probably too much going on and I didn't have the cojones to do unquantized pitches.

Everything is done on the modular except the bass drum and the reverb.

#hot-noodle

This was a sample-based project I started after I smashed my finger this past Tuesday and couldn't fret a board very well. I'd been playing with the vocal samples, chopping them up and stretching them. There were a lot more but it was kind of going nowhere so I decided to turn the project into a backing track to noodle over.

Electric synth strings and Rhodes samples provide the chords, a sub bass sample and a bass synth patch from a newly acquired Yamaha MX61 Synthesizer (NGD!) are my low end.

I'm using a sample I made myself for the vinyl sound. I used to live in a punk venue that had oddball storage rooms the owner would have me clean out, tons of old media including vinyl from the 50's -- a narrative about the differences in animal calls and readings of biblical stories, to name a few. There was a record player I would use in the studio and I could sample whatever. This one is from the animal calls. Literally right when this song ends, if the sample were to continue, the narrator would begin speaking. I almost put that in the track but decided not to.

Guitar is HX Stomp (Placater/Peavey 2x12 Greenback IR) into Helix Native with some Retro Reel, Simple Delay and Hall Reverb on fx busses.

Using Fab Filter plugins.. Pro R for reverb on the synth strings and Rhodes, Pro C for some sidechaining the sub sample and synth bass. Saturn on the Snare and Hi-Hat samples. Limiter on the Master.

Edit: made the video public.

This is a #hot-noodle maybe?

A chill generative ambient piece featuring Rings into Beads. Strymon Magneto is used for vari-speed pitch shifted delays. I can't get over how beautiful the Mercury X sounds.

i had no idea drippy delays were a thing!!
