I have a Marshall Mode Four MF280 that I put some G12K-85s in. Super bassy and woofy. I kinda liked it but it was a little too much on the bass end.

I have a Marshall 1960A that has Vintage 30s in it (3 Chinese and 1 UK). I never really liked that cab, very much. Seemed kinda thin and tinny.

A friend wanted to buy the MF280 but asked if he could have it with the Vintage 30s so i swapped the speakers between the cabinets.

Holy cats! Both cabinets sound perfect now. The MF280 is thumpy but much tighter now. The 1960A has much more heft.

I kinda almost backed out of selling the MF280 because it sounds so good but I’m totally happy with the 1960A now.

Interesting - how was the MF280 with the stock speakers? I've got a couple of them in a Zilla 2x12, but never tried the MF280.

I've noticed some amps don't work well with certain cabinets, regardless of the speakers.

It's weird how that happens. I've never been a huge fan of V30s either, and surprisingly I like them with clean tones more than distorted.

Those mode four cabs were at some point kind of sought after. I forget if it was something about the dimensions or the speakers, but some folks REALLY like those cabs.

I traded two pedals for the bare cabinet. I never experienced it factory-fresh. The Vintage 30s are what came in the 280. It’s the “correct’ speaker, I guess.

I do like them but yeah, they aren’t greenbacks (my favorite). they work nice for cleans but super high headroom gets a little spiky and harsh. You really have to cut the mids.

I kept a pair in my Twin Reverb for quite a while. Having a bit more mids on hand from the speakers helped with the scooped nature of the amp.

It's the speakers. They're V30s, but with more of a lower mid voicing. Avatar used to sell them as the Hellatone 60L
