Suhr SL15 - Plexi tones in a compact head

Dummy question but what it the difference between a lunch box amp using 6v6 vs el84

Some guitarists just don't like EL84s because of the tubbier low end response. Can be a bit harsh in the upper mid range too.

EL84s have lower power requirements and break up sooner, so they're more suitable for low wattage amps, though - so it's the most common design choice for smaller amps.

IME el84s tend to have a stronger midrange focus and a less pronounced tighter low end. 6V6 for me seem to be fuller, rounder, and looser in the low end with much more top end brilliance.

Some of that is based on the differences in the amps that traditionally use each, but I also noticed this same thing when switching between the two on my JRT 9/15. In that amp the el84s are tighter all around with less low end and high end emphasis and more midrange push, while the 6v6 are a bit sweeter with a touch of scoop.

I can’t think of an el84 amp I’ve played that I would describe as tubby in the low end. I can totally see some thinking they are harsh in the mids though

Depends on what 15 watter

Benson Earhart: $3259
Matchless Lightning: $2427
/13 JRT or CCC: $3549
Bad Cat Cub V: $2899
Fender Pro Junior: $649
I guess it’s not THAT bad for the boutique market, but a 1959HW is only $500 more. If I’m chasing Plexi, that’s probably the direction I’d be inclined to go, not that Suhr doesn’t make awesome stuff.

Not a totally apples to apples comparison as the wattage difference could be a pro or con depending on use cases, and that’s likely one of the boundaries here.

Yeah, but a 1959HW is a totally different beast that may be a better amp or may be a worse amp depending on your needs.

“Higher wattage” doesn’t mean “Better amp”

Wattage is more of a personal preference thing in most ways.

$2k seems like a good price for a MIA, presumably turret board build. The Hombre head is $1550 and its PCB layout must keep the price down.

The SL15 parts count is probably similar to 50W Plexi, with some savings in the smaller transformers, the smaller head shell/chassis, and maybe less going on in the input.

From John over at TOP:

"There's a lot of hand wiring in there, everything is stuffed in house and soldered by hand, double sided PC board with 2 ounce copper all plated through holes extremely easy to work on and extremely solid, there is absolutely no advantage to using turrets."

What 2x12 cab/speaker combo would y’all get with this, both for Plexi cleans and Plexi roar?
Also where are these being sold, I don’t see it on Sweetwater.

The only thing this thread has done is lead me to check out the Suhr Badger now. 25 watt/EL34 version. :facepalm

I have one. It’s a great amp but not really a Marshall. It’s more of thicker Marshall thing with a box top end.

I may get one these SL15’s to gig. I absolutely love the SL68 big brother.

Did you mean 'vox' topend? I like that btw and some Hiwatt flavor too.
I do have the Runt20 that does the Marshall thing pretty well so if the Badger is different that's a plus. Something on my radar, but my mind changes a lot when it comes to amps.

Ooops yes. Vox. Sorry.
