I doubt it's an anger-fueled battle over cash and is more likely a "Let the lawyers figure it out" thing. When Portnoy left DT it came out shortly after that he was suing DT for unpaid royalties/profits, but later explained it was a necessary legal step as part of the split and had nothing to do with retribution or catty shit. Maybe there's something in their contracts about not allowing any changes to the distribution of funds without the order of a judge just to ensure no one on the business side of things is sticking their hands in the cookie jar when the money earners have their heads turned.

I've watched a shitload of Stewart Copeland videos in the last several months, he speaks quite highly of Sting and has said they're all on great terms, mainly because they're not writing music together.
