Somehow I’m a Police fan now

Man, I’ve hated The Police as long as I can remember. Namely due to “Roxanne”, but overall there was just this light-hearted thing that I didn’t jive with at all with that band. That chorus in “Everything Little Thing She Does Is Magic” or whatever it’s called is like nails on a chalkboard to me, only getting worse as the song goes on and Sting starts ad-libbing….makes me wanna smash a table.

Over the last couple months, as a result of those Beato videos playing while I’m in the studio, I kept hearing fucking Police songs and eventually “Walking On The Moon” got stuck in my head, first that D11 chord, ‘da-da’ and that bass line, so simple and perfect….and then I hear the hihat and snare with the reverb and delay and that was it, I was off to the races on Stewart Copeland vids. Probably the only drummer to have a Cornish rig!

And then this song found its way to me and I’ve just been enamored with how musical it is. So lush sounding and just perfect.

I’ve probably listened to that song 100x in the last 3 days. Copeland’s percussion stuff is just perfect and it’s just a musical song. And now I’m digging back more and more, while I can’t stand a lot of the production, I’m loving the originality of the band and hearing them in an entirely different light. Stuff like “Bring On The Night”, Copeland’s grooves just move those songs along so damn well.

Police are so cool.

Charming part of Copeland's iconic drumming is that the band didn't mind accelerating during songs when playing live. Just part of the experience. Check the early live shows, tempos are all over the place. I like happen to like that, not today's clinical clicktrack-based shit.

ive been a fan since the early 80s. theres quite a few glib dumb numbers, and sting... well... yeah. but man were they a monstrously good band, and for every bad sing id say theres five perfect ones.

The police were one of those bands that I didn't know much about until I grabbed a greatest hits album. I only grabbed it because it was on sale and promptly realised I knew every bloody song on it. I've got a few of their albums now.

They are all good for one thing or another. They definitely went out on a high note! I love the faux-punk of the first album but I also dig the heck out of the reggae tinge on everything else. Regatta is fantastic but really they all are? I'd say Ghost in the Machine is my "least" favorite but there is some good stuff on there nonetheless.

Great band and great drummer. I haven't listened to them much in a while, but I will add them to the rotation.

I only started watching a few concerts from the reunion tour like 2 years ago and came away floored... If I start one up, I probably have to watch the whole thing.

I'm so in awe of any 3-piece band that can do much more than a few power chords (Rush, The Police, ...)
I couldn't handle that responsibility for more than a few minutes. I would feel like I'm the one that is responsible for making each song different (LOL) and the last one that can f*ck up is me -- this while I like to FU every few bars ;p

Live I only saw Sting once (on possibly the best tour?) after Ten Summoner's Tales (Colaiuta, etc.).

The Police are great at altering their recorded material but still keeping it fairly faithful. They have a great way of medleying things and extending the jams. Just a great band overall. Even if you don't dig Sting.

I do dig Sting but have a lot of catching up to do (2003 and onwards).

I saw Sting at Red Rocks in early 90s. Not a metal concert in any conceivable way but it was a killer show. I love stuff up through that album (Ten Sumner's Tales)

I definitely should have mentioned this in my OP, I did’t hear this song until Mudvayne covered it-

And I had no clue it was a Police song until I looked it up, “King Of Pain” definitely isn’t Sting’s normal positive vibe :rofl

That’s the first time I realized The Police were more than what I thought, all the changes and progressions in that song are brilliant and it made total sense to me why a prog-nu-metal band would cover it.
