Has anyone got a suggestion for a 230v fan that fits the Fryette VHT 2/50/2.
This is what is in ( not my amp in this photo)

I don’t understand why they don’t just price in a good silent fan because many of these amps are used a low volume as well because they basically destroy almost everything solid state and most of those have a fan issue too.

I think this might be a good replacement:

It has less CFM (21CFM vs 32 CFM) than the one in there currently, but you probably don't actually need 32CFM of airflow. The one in there currently is rated for 38 dB of noise whereas the one I linked is only 21 dB. Otherwise, it has the same dimensions, the same two pin termination, the same power draw, and the same voltage rating.

Edit: It looks like this is a discontinued model and they don't make a direct 1:1 new model .

This is the suggested similar replacement for the 8880V:

It is a different power consumption and a lot less CFM, but would probably still work.

I would check yours, if you're in the US you'll more than likely want a 120v one. Most good silent fans are DC powered since they're for PC unfortunately.

That looked good, shame its gone

You are so generous with your knowledge and advice. For once I get to help you.
The 8880VW is discontinued and not available in the UK so I'm going to with the 8880N . Do you think the much reduced air flow is OK?

Ok ordered the 8880N I will report back when it arrives. The case is really well laid out with space around the power tubes and dividers separating them . I can’t imagine a problem.

I doubt you would have a problem without a fan even. Being 2U there is reasonable space and more that many heads that have no fan.
But at 18db I am fitting the 8880N for some extraction.

I think 17 CFM should be more than sufficient as well. I suspect that Fryette just over-spec'd it because he wants this amp to be bullet proof. The 2/90/2 has a fan speed switch and the manual specifies to use the higher fan speed for when running in full power mode and to use the low speed when quiet operation is required or when in the lower power mode. That implies that the full fan speed is more a nice to have rather than a requirement.

The fan in my 2/90/2 at full speed sounds like a damn hairdryer. It’s almost offensive how loud it is. Like the only place it could even be considered remotely appropriate would be backstage at a very loud gig. But honestly that’s not entirely unfair considering what the amp is. Then again that fan does kind of make a mockery of the amp’s master volume control, which is maybe the best and most low-volume friendly master volume control I’ve ever heard.

I had my tech experiment with different component values and we just added a part to the low fan switch so in that mode, the fan still works but is practically silent.

We did that mod maybe 10 years ago and the amp has continued to remain bulletproof.

Mounting a power supply for a 12v fan to the chassis may be a little goofy but would allow you to use the PC fans.

The 8880N fan should arrive this morning.
I will keep you posted.
I did order one from Mouser but they cancelled it because of CaUk regulations.

The 8880N is available and 230v ac . It seems to fit the bill just fine apart from the reduced airflow. But all the ones that have the airflow of the original seem to have a similar db level. As I stated above I can’t see this being a problem because the case layout is really good and there is more space around the power tubes than a lot of heads that don’t have a fan at all .

You might want to also consider the mounting of the fan. Some rubber spacers could help avoid any resonance transfering to the case.

You could always solder a capacitor in there to slow down the fan too. Usually there's a sweet spot between noise and fan speed and it's unlikely it needs to run at full blast.

It’s 18 db and less air movement already on the new one compared with 38 db on the original.

I can’t believe how much better this is. It is quieter than my Axe3 now and stays cool . I really don’t understand why they don’t just fit something like this in the first place. Big thanks to OrganicZed for the help and if you have a power amp with a noisy fan don’t just put up with it.
