What do you all like for every day shoes? Any brands or styles you like or avoid?

I basically go to DSW (chain shoe retailer) every 1-2 years and get a pair of whatever seems comfortable and doesn't look ugly. Lately it was a pair of New Balance sneakers but those things fell apart really quickly.

I've got wide feet so a lot of the usual suspects (Vans, Chucks) don't work out.

I buy a pair of New Balance 608s every year. Last year's pair gets moved to work duty. So I get about 2 years out of them but the second year is pretty harsh.

new balance 574s

i think im going to get a couple pairs of saucony shadows next but the 574s are pretty sweet.

I wore Vans and Chucks exclusively for 25 years. My back is fucked, but man I looked so cool. :facepalm

These days its 90s basketball shoes and runners / trainers. Jordans and Air Max 98s being my favorite.

New Balance are great in part because they offer widths, so wider feet can usually be accommodated comfortable. If they fell apart in one year, that sucks. Saucony has classically been a wider shoe than say Nike, Addidas, etc. so you may want to look at that brand as well. I really love the couple of pair of Keen's I have purchased over the past 10 years. Was able to find ones that were a bit wider, but it is not true of their product range brand wide. I also picked up my first pair of Skeechers about 6 months ago and they seem like a well built shoe and did offer a wider width (but did not have in stock for the one I really wanted so settled for one they did have in wide width). Be sure to note what you are using them for and whether or not that jives with what the shoe was made for. For example, you do not want to play basketball in a running shoe as they are not built for the lateral motion and stability like a basketball shoe is. And vice a versa, no basketball shoes on the track if you have any sense ;~)) Point is, think about what you are doing when you wear them and try and match the shoe type that would be likely built for a similar type of foot movement. If you are in construction, I would not buy running shoes would be an example ;~)) Best wishes on your search and your comfort! As for looks, if you are worried about what other people think of them, I can not help.

I tried sketchers three years ago and instantly got mad at myself for not investing in good shoes until my 40’s :facepalm :bonk The first pair was these summer sneakers with no laces… best damn shoes I’ve ever had. Walking on clouds, helped my physical back issues better… good stuff.

I've been wearing some outdated Sketcher slip ons (work relaxed fit) too...but just around the house...they feel very "disposable"...I'm not wearing them out in the fields for real ranch work...for that I have an old pair of Thorogood Moc-Toe Extreme Waterproof, mine ready to be re-built cuz they are thrashed!

Winter: Red Wing boots.
Spring: Nike Air Force 1 sneakers.
Summer: Various brands' leather dress shoes.
Fall: Chelsea boots, don't remember the brand atm.

Instead of buying shoes every few years, buy a few pairs of something higher quality and rotate them. It's like strings on your guitar lasting longer if you don’t play the same guitar every day. Use shoes A today, shoes B tomorrow, shoes A the day after that...

For leather shoes, don't buy anything that is not repairable. No glued on soles, spend the money on Goodyear or Blake welted shoes. When the sole goes, you get it replaced. I've got shoes that are like 10+ years old still in use.

Purchased these in 2016 and still wearing them 9 years later...my favorite shoe. Lightweight, waterproof and very comfortable. Discontinued, but there must be a new version out there. Soles are starting to wear out finally and will probably buy a new pair this year.

Just read some reviews and it looks like they may not be as good as they once were.

Used to love my Keen Targhee's. The only issue, which has been happening with most welded sole boots is the adhesive they use, it fails far too early. Even my Targhee styled sandals completely delaminated after a year. Surely due to environmental BS making adhesives less effective.

Rant:
Finding footwear that lasts is a crap shoot even from the best of brands these days.

I take reviews with somewhat of a grain of salt (most likely to leave feedback will be negative), but quality and durability has gone downhill. Some of it is lighter materials which are obviously not going to be as durable, to provide more breathability, particularly for athletic footwear.

Getting older makes for challenges as well, injuries and the fact that our feet change over time doesn't help matters.

Even when I used to run, I couldn't wear New Balance comfortably, the arches were too high for me, but I felt they were quality, just not for my feet. My arches are normal medium and I need more padding on the ball and heel these days. Even my old Saucony's don't quite work for me any longer and sizing is off from prior models.

I literally tried Asics, NB, Saucony,Brooks, Keen, and Nike, probably 15 different pairs and models and ended up with only 3 that I felt would work.

The Nike of course are a discontinued model, but working well so far and were reasonably priced The Keen are a retro style (read somewhat ugly as hell, but comfy, provide good support and have a decent toe box, not as good as the targhees, but better than most. And the Brooks I think cascadia are working well so far but getting into the top price bracket - fine if they remain durable for a reasonable period.

I despise the trend of memory foam. Initially it feels great, but I believe it's a disaster for true support and not building up bacterial stench very quickly, and will likely cause young people problems far earlier in life - One of the primary reasons I've nearly dropped even looking at Sketcher's because they embraced and pushed it hard in almost all of their casual footwear lines - hate the stuff.

I'm big on rotating shoes so I think I'll get two pairs of sneakers.

I had a nice collection of dress shoes but after Covid I barely go to the office and don't need to wear the fancy ones anymore. Down to a pair of brown and a pair of black shoes at this point, both of which are pretty good quality with real leather and serviceable soles:

More often when I go to the office I'm wearing some semi casual shoes, either a chukka or something like these:

For cold weather I will sometimes wear Red Wings Iron Rangers which are a classic, but mostly a pair of Keen boots which are super warm, waterproof, and have crazy good grip in the snow and ice:

So that leaves me with sneakers...I picked up a pair of Adidas which are interesting, never owned a pair. They are pretty comfortable and look half decent:

Thinking of getting a second pair of sneakers though, maybe a pair of Air Force 1's in white? That would be an interesting alternative.

Keen make fantastic boots.

for about 20 years it was redwing 202s or hiking shoes of some sort. i dropped the 202s cause they kinda started to suck a while back and anymore its been salewa low tops or vans with insoles. 5 days a week its these redwing 'keens' i got state issue for work or a pair of esd low top keen works.

Really light and comfy, wide fit, and also goretex so waterproof but breathable.
Liked them so much I got another pair in blue!
