RV5 vs RV6 vs RV200

I've owned one before, and they're okay, but I'm not a HUGE fan of it like I am the RV-5.

I really think about 10 years ago they decided to bias their reverbs towards the darker side of things, when the RV-6 came out, and it seems that trend has continued.
There is an effect tone control in the 500 that would fix this imo but I get your point.

Is actually kinda nuts how much the RV-5 and MercuryX kill the RV-6 and RV-200.

I should've included the MXR Reverb in this comparison. I totally forgot about it.

Wow it's like the RV200 isn't even there, it sounds like it's been watered down or not passing the effected signal properly. I listened with my screen off first time and my preference was the Meris followed by the RV5, then RV6 and last RV200. The RV6 improved a bit when you adjusted the settings at the end but the RV200 still sounded like it was broken, like it's not passing signal properly compared to the others.

Big respect to the RV5 compared to the meris considering how much they cost. What are the other modes like on the RV5?

I'd like to see the MXR up against the RV5. I used to have the MXR and loved it. Another pedal I sold when I went down the modelling route that I should have held onto.

I'll do a few clips today.

I tell you what though.... even using the EQ on the VP4.... I struggle to get the same kind of cut and brightness from the Fractal verbs as the RV5 too. It is close... but not the same.

Yeah, I'm seriously disappointed with the RV200 to be honest. Not just for this kind of huge modulated tone, but also the others.... arpverb sounds hackeneyed already... slowverb doesn't give you the kind of control you'd really want; the Ventris is way better at the swell stuff... and the other modes... I dunno man... it just doesn't get as wet as I would like. It is almost like under the hood, the effect level is clamped at -5dB or something.

I've just saved some ebay searches for RV5 and M300. A RV5 sold two days ago got £33!:crazy

You definitely saved me some time though. I was all set to buy a RV200 in a week or two.

That is an absolute STEAL.

I've booked the return already!!! RV-6 is going back too. But I don't hate it. It just isn't the pedal for a lower noise floor version of the RV-5, which is what I wanted really. The MercuryX (which I've owned for ages now) is actually a better fit for that.

Something that goes unnoticed quite often is, the big box Meris pedals have built in noise-gates, which is really frigging cool.

Impressive how close the RV-5 and Meris can get to each other on that particular setting. I suppose the Meris is dialed in to match the RV-5.

I didn’t know this, but I’m guessing you actually can’t get the RV-6 into RV-5 territory in the highs? I’ve read about it but actually never bothered to listen to a comparison like yours. I would conclude that the RV-6 is a very smooth and “sit back behind” ambiance reverb while the RV-5 is more of an efficient effect that will be noticed on top of anything.
It makes it very placable in many positions whereas the RV-6 would always be last in a chain.

Right! I had to check the original listing to make sure it wasn't broken but it was working and had the box. Unbelievable deal. The RV-5s seem to be averaging £80-£100 and the MXR is about £100-£120 if you're patient.

I might try and grab one of each, keep the one that floats my boat and move the other one on.

Yep. This is exactly it. The RV-6 (and RV-200) are simply incapable of getting the same tonality. This isn't a subjective thing. Boss objectively fucked up the algorithm. They nerfed its capabilities and I don't really know why, but it sounds all the worse for it.

I don’t know if they fucked up really, it can be that they wanted the the next reverb to be more subtle yet very ambient. As a contrast to the 5.

Also, i notice the Meris benefit from a predelay. It’s vague (or short) but noticeable compared to the RV-5 when i put this in my headphones.

Edit: maybe it’s not a predelay on the attack, just a longer beginning of the reverb.

I think if that is the case, they should've called it something else.

People not liking the RV-6 because of differences with the modulate mode against the RV-5, seems to be reasonably common.

The RV200 is literally the worst reverb pedal I've ever tried. Significantly shitter than the RV500, RV5, and reasonably shitter than the RV6. Massive fail IMHO.

The shimmer suuuuucccckkkkkkksssss.

The reverse mode suuuuuuuccccckkkkksssss.

Your standard sounds - hall, plate, spring... they're only okay.

Any specialist modern sounding stuff you might want... this pedal just doesn't do it.

you’re talking with a reverb voice now. So i suggest you take a break and do something else.

The weird thing with this is I assumed the basic algorithms on the Dd200 and RV200 would be the same as the 500 series but with less adjustment. That, however, doesn't seem to the case now I've properly looked into them.

It doesn't does it.

And this is the annoying thing with Boss IMO. They seem to tweak things across units quite dramatically, so you can never really be sure you're getting the thing you expect until you get it.

Especially because most of the promo I've seen for the 200 series seems to suggest that. I don't really want a 500 series pedal or anything with a lot of menus. I work better with fewer options that I can get to know really well so a 200 series seemed to be right up my alley.

I was really happy with the M300 when I had it so a M300, RV5 and Neunaber Immerse (I'd forgotten about Neunaber) shootout is definitely in my future. I've got some ebay searches all setup and just need to find them at the right money. I've got a bunch of stuff here to move on I just need to stop being a lazy sod and list them.

I'd love to try a Neunaber. But the Illumine or whatever it is cool just looks like an absolute dickhole to use. The user interface really puts me off.
