Reverb vs Delay?

Definitely reverb. Just a touch. I hate spring and hall though. Plate is where it’s at.

I admit, I'm not a fan of spring reverb, either. I walked away from it back in 1989 and never looked back, when I transitioned over to digital reverbs - only there were no reverb pedals to be heard of, at the time. That has changed tremendously, for the better, in recent years, though.

Practically wrote a dissertation on why I hate it, over on TGP.

High quality digital reverb (preferably in stereo) is where it's at for me.

Spring reverb is like wah - it’s the only thing that can do that sound when you need/want it

What's your preference regarding reverb vs delay to add a little (a lot?) space to your tone.

Very often a mix of both. Delay has too much of that D-D-D-D-elay attack nonsense and reverb tends to get too washy. So I just mix the two quite often.

What's an effects loop? Now I'm kidding. Delay/Reverb is usually at the end of my pedalboard chain. But having it in front of any drive, be it amp or pedal, is what I meant.

I use reverb more but have a preference for delay weirdly enough? I guess you could also say that the higher the gain, the more sensible delay becomes over reverb.

I am somewhat picky about reverbs where I like plate > hall > room. Spring is "meh", whether it's a real one or a digital reverb. I can never quite decide if I like the "better" reverbs of my SA Collider, or if I prefer the "blends into the base sound" flavor of Strymon's reverbs like what I have on the Flint V2.

For delay, the only type I care about are tape delays. Analog and digital are fine, but I just always gravitate back to a bit worn sounding tape delays. Love them for leads.

I was gasing for the UA Golden badly but playing with some of the large reverbs in the AxeFx I realized that for me reverb is more of an 'effect' than delay, if that makes sense.

Hmm, I hear delay is more useful for me too but sometimes I like to add big space without the repeats. Still contemplating about the UA Golden.

I much prefered the Golden, although I only had the pleb FM3. Something about Fractal verbs doesn't sound right to me, especially anything properly long and huge

Both. I grabbed another M300 yesterday. I will never use anything deeper than that but the core sounds on it are good and I didn't have to break the bank. I need to find a delay that is the same equivalent now

a little delay is fun, but i use reverb as a special effect for recording. never use either live.

Reverb is fun to mess with but if I'm playing with people or recording it's usually delay. The exception is spring reverb as an effect when I want that drip.

Yeah, the whole this versus that, either/or, divisive, must be one or the other, nature of the human mind is a bad fucking habit we'd all do well to kick. Before it kicks our collective ass right out the door!

I can't even compute those kinds of questions most days. It's like asking "Do you prefer your left leg or your right?"

I pretty much only use reverb on cleans and leads. There’s a few times I’ve put a reverb on everything in a mix to simulate a room sound/add some ambience but that’s as far as that’s gotten in regard to rhythms.

I know I’m WAY pickier about reverbs than I am delays, there’s a lot of reverbs that I just don’t dig the sound of. Spring reverbs are great in the amps that come with it and the tones those amps are associated with, but I’ve yet to hear a spring reverb used outside of that context where it sounded appealing. Plates are my go-to.

But I love delay. While I mainly only use it on leads and cleans as well, there’s the occasional rhythmic/dotted 8th riff that pops up and can be the meat of a riff itself. There’s the ear candy aspect of it, a great ping pong in headphones is pleasing, but compositionally, when writing a lead, sometimes the next notes are dictated by what the delay is spitting back at me and I really enjoy finessing that interaction.
