Question For The Alternate Pickers Among Us

Yes, there are certain tempo areas that give me trouble, with certain techniques. I can play stuff at 80-120 easily enough. I can play stuff at 150-170 easily enough. The stuff in between - let's say 130-150 - does take extra concentration, practice, and focus on technique.

But it really depends on the riff.

If I'm used to playing something specific at a specific speed, I sometimes find it hard to play it slower. Like if I'm teaching my son a riff or a lick, I have to think about it a little more so I can execute it slowly. Whereas playing it faster, or up to speed, just comes out automatically.

If I have something committed to memory I can’t necessarily break it down at all because I only remember the thing as a whole. Ask me to change tempo and I will forget it in the middle and definitely don’t ask me about a segment in the middle.🤣
