Quad Cortex Mini

Exactly. Do you want a QC with 10 buttons or 4 buttons? One is going to have a liiiiiitle more flexibility :rofl

I have certain needs

I’m ok with reading manuals, in fact I usually enjoy it. But I like to be able to do most things first without and then read the manual to expand my knowledge.
You mean you guys don’t read the manuals for shit you’re even THINKING about buying front to back for weeks before making a purchase?

I used to, but I’d rather do a check to see how intuitive a device is before I read the manual. Plus, it’s a modeler, I’ve used basically every modeler there is so how different could they be, really?

Ordered mine back in February, it arrived yesterday. All in all, very nice unit. Here’s some quick thoughts:

  • The screen is very durable. Maybe a little too thick as it’s not the most responsive to touch.
  • The sounds are exactly as expected - best-in-class amp capture tone with high-end effects.
  • I’m finding it less intuitive than the nano cortex. With the NC, everything makes sense and the phone app is very straight-forward.
    • With this, I have to menu dive a bit.
    • You quick-press both left buttons for tuner, but to get out of the tuner, you have to press the top right button. What? Why is it not the same button?
    • You can press and hold the left two buttons to go back a bank, but you cannot go forward a bank. Don’t accidentally hit that live!
    • Turning the knobs, by default, does nothing. Again a total head-scratcher - why are they not assigned to anything stock?
    • Don’t make me open the manual, which btw does not come with the device, and is not in a downloadable PDF, but only available on the website.
    • I was easily able to setup an expression pedal on the NC in like 5 minutes. I need to do some reading in the manual because I have no idea why I can’t figure it out here.
    • Most of the factory presets use rows 1 and 3. Why not row 2? I much prefer the Fractal grid layout where I can run parallel effects down the rows if I want to, here to do that it’s clicking on the S and then adapting the whole next row to it and then clicking on the M to get it to go back to the top row for the output. I have no idea what S and M mean in this context yet and I figured it out by chance when trying to create parallel delay and reverb lines.
    • I never once cracked open the NC manual and was able to figure it all out via the phone app. It seems I will have to read the manual a bit for this device as it’s not quite as intuitive and straight-forward, but that’s OK I’ve dealt with much worse before. I remember someone had to write a whitepaper for the TC G System back in the day.
Seems like a super cool device that will fit my needs, but the amount of setup is a bit of a chore. Still though, man the tone is amazing and i can capture my amps and IRs and get my tones anywhere, which is just incredible.

There’s a question in this thread about noise, I’m not hearing any at all. it’s dead quiet. I do get some noise on high gain captures, however I set the In block gate to 100% and add a gate after the capture, also set to 100% but triggering off the input, and it becomes a perfectly noiseless little rig with tons of sustain and doesn’t cut off my notes.
The Quad Mini, as its big bother, uses DSP cores, row 1 and 2 use the first halp of the power, row 3 and 4 the other. If you are having isues with not enought processing power, send part of your signal chain to row 3 and use that to move or add blocks.

I have the Mini and the Nano and the Nano is way more simpler to operate, but very limited. Its a compact fun and pro sounding unit. The tones are identical to the QCM.

Ah ok that makes sense. I was not running out of DSP, it’s super powerful, but that’s good to know I can double the DSP power by using row 3. Thank you!
