Pedals vs Amp drive

I've never really liked the hx OCD tbh. I've tried it loads of times with different amps and it's never really worked for me. I'd like to know whether the 1.4 they modelled has the germanium diode with one of the mosfets or not.

I always liked vs 1.3 and 1.7 with the OCD.

Interesting! Truthfully, I think the fact of the matter is that I just genuinely don’t like the actual OCD, hence why I enjoy the HX one more

And keep in mind this is strictly with the DR, much like your conclusion in the OP I rarely see a reason to bother with pedal dirt analog or otherwise when I have real amp gain at my disposal lol

I’ll take the premise of the OP even further and more controversial

Fuck boosting

Analog or modeling

I just don’t like it all that much. Ever. Sometimes it’s kind of cool for a minute the. I disengage and it’s so much better to my ears

Whether it’s an amp that “needs a boost for metal” (almost always bullshit imo) or amps that supposedly thrive off a boost (rectos)

Pass.

*takes another shot if tequila*

Happy Halloween ya fucks

*disclaimer* my keeley compressor + never gets disengaged no matter the amp so -technically- I’m always “boosting” to some extent

Harmonic boosts at low volume rule! Spaceman Mercury IV or Saturn VI, Strymon Deco, Darkglass...

Kiss my grits! Happy Halloween! :beer

Very curious about spaceman stuff, never got my hands on one but have heard nothing but good things from trusted sources

I love boosting lol. My SD-1 is usually always on. If it’s not it’s because I’m using my treble booster or Super Phat Mod.

If I get anything spaceman I’m going straight into either the Sputnik or Titan. Leaning Titan because I don’t have a tone bender yet.

Have a trusty sd-1 that always ends up back on my “pedal shelf” haha

The best I ever liked it was going into the clean channel of my old Mesa express 5:50+, that did sound sweet

Sputnik III is a personal fav fuzz but is kinda .... "temperamental?" with the Drift switch. Great fun.

Titan II is a fuzz for all occasions.

Gemini IV I'll have to drag out with its Silicon and Germanium goodness...

Nebula is another fav of mine, I need to get the switch on the Atlas III fixed.

Polaris is a great OD, Artemis is ... glorious whatever the hell it is (EQ mostly atm but can be a Wah) and Explorer my fav Phaser.

According to my spreadsheet I also have an Apollo VII somewhere...

The things pedals do well are fuzz, console style preamps, tape drive etc unique things that won't typically exist inside an amp. I'm "meh" on overdrives and boosts for the most part, a lot of them do the same thing with marginally different flavors. They work fine, but I tend to prefer amp distortion.

I do think my Strymon Riverside can be quite similar to the amp drive on my BluGuitar, but without the aggressive Plexi treble/presence frequencies.

Boils down to master of taste and which style you play. 🙂

Also, depends on the amp, and how its drive hits.

Anyhow, I personally prefer slightly hairy amps with tight bottom end and lots of low mids, and use them for my base tone, along with a treble booster first in chain, followed by gnarly parallel fuzz (MKII + a sprinkle of clean-ish octave fuzz).

Amp distortion itself is fine, but I usually end up choosing pedals (or Helix Floor) to handle gain staging/switching duties, because it allows for more flexibility as to which of my amps I pick (and why is it always the LAB L5? 😂).

Slap the pedals on the floor, dial in base tone, and go!

I guess we all know the situation -> I tend to dial in any amp to a similar voice (see above), as long as it lets me. It's just what my ears tell me sounds "right". 🤷‍♂️

Never been a fan of getting the drive sound from pedals, but using an EQ or optical compressor in front of an amp to spice it up a bit I'm all for.

F it. Run a blasted comp, into a blasted fuzz, into a blasted drive with no gain, into the crunch channel of any high gain amp.....tell me it isnt fun riding that wave with your volume knob.

Silly purist ass methodologies :facepalm

I want ALL the gain....ALL the time!😎 At my choosing......with no clicky clicky!!!🤣

I am not an OCD fan either. :idk

That damn toggle, and it's either too fat and dark, or too thin and bitey.

For me, and my ears.

God dammit, SOTS when did we develop this sympatico we seem to have going on??? :idk

It's creeping me the fuck out!!! :rofl

I did put my Maxon CP101 back on my board a week or so ago. But I have it
set for squishy sounds with a Strat drenched in PastFx Chorus. :love

Never really done the always on comp thing, due to the perceived loss of
dynamics and touchiness. I like touchiness. :chef

Welp, that didn't last long. :hugitout

How much squish in your gish? :idk

The keeley is magical and the dry blend knob is ace for maintaining dynamics. I pretty much just keep all the knobs at noon

I mostly just “need” it for cleans and I’m too lazy to turn it off when switching to gain sounds but it’s not that noticeable whether it’s on or off with distortion anyways
