Pedals vs Amp drive

Was round at a friend's house earlier dropping off an OCD clone I'd built for him. It sounded really sweet into his hot rod deville with his les paul. Got home, hunted mine out of pedal mountain and spent a bit of time A/Bing a few drive pedals with the OCD mostly coming out on top as a good allrounder.

Turned off my pedals and switched to the JVM Od1 channel. Forgot about A/Bing and spent an hr just playing. I waste so much time mucking about with ODs only to keep reminding myself I really only need the amps channels and maybe a boost.

OCD is a 🐐 OD :satan

Don't disagree at all. With my mates hot rod deville and his vox it sounded epic. I used to love it into my Princeton which is why I still have it.

It sounds great into the jvm crunch channel but compared to Od1 a Marshall esque pedal isn't really required.

I just need to learn my lesson that fuzz and boosts are the only things I really need with this amp. Except for delays and reverbs etc.

Hot Rod Deville + OCD Vs. Marshall JVM.

So not a fair fight, man!

I've done it all in my time here on Earth. Single channel amps. Multi-channel amps.
Modelers. Plug-ins. Pedalboard and amp as pedal platform. It's all various varieties
of good and workable. For me.

Then again, I am pretty much a slut and will take it any way it is given to me. Sorry if that
sounded weird, or uncouth. :idk

all about amp distortion for me for most sounds. I only ever pedals when I want them to sound NOT like an amp, and purposefully a bit crap and pedal like, or as a boost for pushing an overdriven amp a bit harder.

That's where I'm at now with this amp. I was in Fender land for a good few years and for some reason still think I need a million OD pedals on my board.

When I had a period of about 5 years where I was exclusively trying a variety of fuzz pedals
I realized a clean amp as the platform was the way to go. Prior to that it was a spate of
2 and 3 channel behemoths. Prior to that (and after the Fuzz foray) it was Marshall! Marshall!
Marshall! and no channel switching--just volume knob on the guitar and touch.

Grateful for all the avenues and byways we can travel to get good to great tones in life. :beer

I have 3 completely different rigs setup and ready to go at anytime right now.

Fractal into interface into Computer into Monitors. :chef

Mesa Roadster with nothing but a guitar. :banana

W/D dual amp setup (Mesa TA-30/Bogner Goldfinger) paired with a pedalboard. :pickle

Everyone of those makes me smile. Like I said, such a slut!!

Absolutely. My next amp buy is going to be something voxy and I'll be loading up a board with all the different flavours of drive I can fit on there.

And some drive pedals sound great with volume cranked – Analogman Prince of Tone and Klon KTR spring to mind. Fantastic when cranked, but not much to praise at bedroom volume. Very “meh” and then “Holy xxxx!”

The clean channel on my Orange Rocker 15 is neutral or dead and needs pedals at any volume. The Dark Terror “needs” (meaning “I like”) a harmonic boost pedal at low volume but loves a PoT or KTR cranked. And that’s just 15w.

I’ve never fallen too deep into OD pedals (fuzz is a different story) but I do like them for certain applications and of course it all depends on the context of the amp your playing (say a deluxe reverb vs a JVM haha)

Ocd is interesting to me. I’ve bought and sold them more times than I care to admit and never really jive but I -really- like the HX model in front of my deluxe reverb, sounds killer

i have a Ampeg v50h which is just a 50w EL34 NMV plexi type thing i use as a clean platform, i have a few distortion pedals i could use as my main rig without hesitation if i had to. if anything, they can be a cheap way just to mix things up once in a while without buying a whole other amp

I've never really liked the hx OCD tbh. I've tried it loads of times with different amps and it's never really worked for me. I'd like to know whether the 1.4 they modelled has the germanium diode with one of the mosfets or not.

I always liked vs 1.3 and 1.7 with the OCD.
