Pedal Chaining Question

Just picked up a vintage ’65 Twin—absolute magic!

I was all-in on modeling for a while, but the itch hit, and when I stumbled across this Twin, I couldn’t pass it up.

Right now, I’m running an HX Effects and an H90 in front of the amp, but I’m looking for a quiet practice solution that still lets me use my board. Ideally, something that lets me monitor via headphones.

I’ve considered a ToneX One at the end of the chain, but since it doesn’t have a headphone out—and wouldn’t if it’s in the loop of the HX or H90—it feels like a dead end.

Maybe an HX Stomp? Open to other ideas.

What would you guys recommend?

Tonex One does have a headphone out and it is able to drive my Senn HD6xx pretty well. You just need a 1/4 TRS to 1/8" adapter and use the regular 1/4 output. Not sure why you would want it in a loop if you are doing Twin type tones, as the Twin doesn't have a loop either.

Another option would be a Suhr RL IR. If you pull a pair of power tubes, the Twin will expect an 8 ohm load which the Suhr provides.

Any of the major modelers and most of the cheaper ones will work. Pre-Tonex I used a cheap NUX Amp Academy (which has a loop) for a similar role. It sounded good enough for practice but Tonex with a good capture sounds and feels better. Something like a Stomp is a lot more flexible but with an HX effects and an H90 what would you run on the Stomp?

Yep tracking the headphone out on the ToneX if it’s the last in the chain. I was tracking that you can just plug a headphone jack directly into it - you need an adapter?

As far as the HX Stomp is concerned, I considered selling the HX Effects to buy a Stomp and put the H90 into the loop of the Stomp in order to use the headphone out.

It depends on the headphones. The Tonex One headphone out is shared with the instrument out which is a 1/4” TRS jack. Some headphones use 1/4” (mostly hifi types) while many use 1/8”. Either way it is easy to go from one to the other with an adapter, but if your headphones have a 1/4 plug, you won’t need it.
