Just finished watching this, and it’s so so cool. Always wanted someone to go through this amp and work out exactly what it is, where it’s similar to an 800, where it’s similar to a Jose, what the connection to a butcher is, exactly what all the dipswitches do. Having these legends do it is even cooler, and their reaction and response to it all is awesome to follow.

They all seemed to have a very cool appreciation for what this amp was going for, especially in its day which hadn’t really been done before on a production amp.

Defo firing my one up tomorrow. And adding alerts for a Butcher and old Laney…. Some of my own clips, there isn’t too much on youtube of this amp and many of them aren’t great. Always felt this video did the amp some justice.

Looking forward to watching that episode.

Any idea how similar to the VTM the rockmaster preamp is? I absolutely love the lead channel on that thing.

It may be my favourite episode of all time from anything these guys have done, the whole concept and way they can bounce around was perfect. And it was an ideal amp to choose - not too obvious but also has a lot to dig through, with some nice historical context thrown in. Gower comes across so so well too, love that he's on board with these guys and giving a glimpse into his process and mindset.

Had a quick glance at a schematic and it's pretty different I think. There's a preamp and amp called Rockmaster and I believe they're totally different things? I've had alerts set up on eBay for years for a rockmaster and I think in that time only one has ever come up. Wasn't crazy expensive but still felt like a gamble..... Think I paid £200 for my VTM.

did NOT take advantage of the dipswitch array
Yikes. Thats where the magic was.

Not spamming but just remembered I did this one too. Quite cool as the DSL got a mention in the video and the BE100 is obviously relevant to their discussion too. Not sure I have a favourite out of them in this context, they’re all cool to me

The VTM120 was my first tube head before I understood what tubes were LOL. It replaced a Peavey Bandit with a Boss HM-2 for the high gains.

Wish I still had the VTM.

God these heads were HEAVY. Had the 60 and the 120 back in the day but did NOT take advantage of the dipswitch array. Always use a distortion pedal with it. Definitely a hindsight amp.
It's that massive MDF headshell they used back then. Glad they switched to normal thickness plywood with the 5150.
Looking forward to watching that episode.

The Rockmaster preamp is part of the Ultra lineage (Triumph PAG > Ultra > XXX/JSX), which is its own thing from the VTM design.

Dang, I had a VTM yearsssss ago and I don't remember it sounding this good. Maybe I need to try one again, I just can't get over how ugly those older Peavey amps were.

So what's the word on the pedal version, anybody get a chance to try one yet?
Dropped my guitar off at the local shop tonight oddly enough and they had one of each of the preamp pedals. They are kinda weird in person. Ugly AF  It was 10 minutes before closing and I didn't want to drag out some oddball rig so I could decide to buy one online :sofa:rofl

I had a Duel Two Twelve, which I'm assuming was also the ultra lineage. Wish I still had it.

They are small and that is also kinda weird. Especially when the OG VTM was 137lbs vs a 8oz pedal :bag:pickle
Peavey made them heavy for sure. Part of the charm! I don't remember ever trying a VTM amp though. The OP clips sound pretty good.

Amazing amps.

Long time ago I got a 60 w the 4x12 for really cheap

Stupidily I sold the amp for what I paid and kept the cab which made it free but I def should have kept the amp.

Heard a 120 really loud at an amp fest a few years after that. It had this insane power to it that was very very memorable.
