Passive Dummy Load for 50W 8 Ohm Amp

Hello,

I am using a Fryette - VHT 2/50/2 power amp, but in some situations only one cab is connected to the channel A, which leaves the other channel B disconnected to a proper load.

That's fine as long as the Standby/On switch of channel B stays in the "Standby" position, but I worry that a bandmate or even myself will inadvertently hit the wrong switch.

Are there cheap products such as "passive dummy load" which exist which could connect to the channel B of the amp? I don't need any attenuator or silent recording functionality, so any reactive load boxes such as Two Note are overkill.

Thanks for any suggestions!

This is the one case where you could simply use a big heatsinked, 50-100W 8 ohm resistor.

But if you don't want a DIY solution, find the cheapest resistive attenuator with 50+ watt power handling.

What I'd do however is that when you know there will be only one cab connected, put some tape or cover over the other standby switch so somebody will immediately see it as "don't touch".

Might also be worth asking Fryette if you can e.g take the fuse out for this?

Thanks for your rep laxu !

I actually got an answer grom Fryette support through their forums:

"
There is no need for a dummy load.

Just leave the unused channel on Standby and turn the volume down.

Even if some sound gets through by accidentally turning on the unused channel, the possibility of damage is practically non-existent.
"

Still, I’ll simply put a tape to prevent accidentally turning on the B channel when no cab is connected to its output.

Well it looks like you have a no cost plan.

The least expensive non-DIY option for anyone needing something similar is probably the Bugera PS1 @ $129. It's supposedly rated for a 100w amp which means it's okay to use at full attenuation with a 50W amp.

I've held on to my old 16 ohm Hot Plate to use as a bench load box. I have a growing collection of old tube PA's and salvaged Hammond amps in my someday stash to fiddle F around with when I retire. That day is only a few years away now.
