NPD- PastFX Patriarch

I managed to snag one PastFX pedal before the whole doggie incident and it showed up Monday. I plugged it in for 5 minutes yesterday but haven't really felt like playing much the past few days, but I could tell right away it was exactly what I was looking for.

It was made to recreate Gilmour's '94 Civil War Big Muff tone and after spending a whopping 5 more minutes dialing it in tonight I was right in the ballpark. This is going into a Hiwatt model in the Fractal with every knob at 5. Gilmour was just using the Hiwatts' power sections on this tour, so I figured this would be a fairly neutral spot to keep it at.

Using the Freqout for the feedback and everything else is in the AxeFX.

When I've messed around with other pedals aimed in this direction (Mojohand Iron Bell) or even trying to do it up in Fractal land, it's always been a battle of getting the right top/bottom end while retaining that fuzz character, this pedal definitely resolves those issues with the B/M/T and mid boost/cut switch. It can be as equally fat as it is cutting instead of one or the other.

Hitting those divebombs on that "Sorrow" intro, with the rotary cabs swirling in, just a giant smile on my face. I really can't wait to explore this pedal some more. An awesome benefit of going down the Gilmour/EJ hole in the last few years is that tones I love for myself have falllen out somewhere along the way. The Dover Drives got me loving the half distortion/half fuzz aspect of them more than the EJ thing and I'm getting giddy thinking about this Patriarch into a loud ass amp because I can just imagine the balls it packs. I need to start writing music utilizing these tones!

That sounds fantastic. I've only tried the TD/Y they make for the Gilmour thing but I might have to try a Patriarch next - has that thick yet clear thing going on.

Hahaha when I was coming up empty on finding a TD-Y last week I considered hitting you up to see if you still had it and wanted to part with it. :rofl

I just love that low end bloom when I hit those divebombs, surprisingly dynamic for the Drive being maxed out on the pedal!

Hell yeah! :rawk

So cool they are doing those Buffalo FX offerings in new form. I had heard that the French
dude who started Buffalo FX had based the builds off the Cornish pedals Dave used. :idk

I do believe that's how it started. Fortunately, Cornish has been rather forthcoming in regard to the tweaks he did to Dave's pedals and his own stuff. While I'd love to own an actual Cornish pedal just because of who he is, I'm not spending $800+ on a modified Big Muff, especially when PastFX is pulling them off for about $150.

It'll be a while before I can start buying anything again, but PastFX' Revolution is a Cornish G2 clone and it's been the source of Gilmour's more modern tones. It took me a while to catch onto digging them as much as I have his previous tones, but after those shows I was hooked so that's definitely on the shorter list of 'to buy' stuff.

In the live realm of soaring, melodic guitar solos that sound absolutely huge....DG stands alone IMO.

That sounds amazing. I can get similar sounds with my SUF Red Army boosted but it definitely got me looking at PastFX’s site. I kinda want (and by kinda I mean really want) their Elastic Mattress. And their Powerbooster. And TD-Y. I’ve been getting some solid Tube Driver-ish tones with my Keeley Super Phat mod, but the TD-Y intrigues me still. Plus the Powerbooster… I could run my Ram’s Head muff into that.

Also I’m glad there’s folks here that will help enable my Gilmour tone chasing rabbit hole bullshit.

I own the Elastic Mattress. It is indeed a great pedal. I have the TD-Y and Patriarch on order. Verlie is the best! :beer

I'm sure you've checked out Kit Rae and Gilmourish. Have you checked out MustyGuitar on YouTube?

(The below may be pedantic as fuck and I’m more than willing to admit that as I’m a total nerd when it comes to Gilmour)

Musty’s channel is great and I signed up to his patreon to get the backing tracks and some of the isolated tones, he just gets a bit cocky at times as he’s stated on more than one occasion that he does the best Gilmour covers and has the most accurate tone recreations. He’s absolutely great at nailing the tones all around and if you didn’t have a specific solo to reference you wouldn’t know any better, but when it gets into specifics of certain solos he’ll just say the production is why it sounds different from his version when that’s not always the case.

I’m eventually going to the get the PastFX version but I did grab the Mooer E Lady on the cheap. While this pedal is not on par with what Verlie does, for $40 it’s pretty damn solid. Bought it mainly because I wanted to make sure I’d even like the effect and I do. So I’m playing the hell out of this little box until closer to my next bonus when I can order one of Verlie’s stomp boxes! Or maybe I’ll get the Powerboost instead… or the TD-Y… or the Patriarch (I honestly love the idea of that one but I still kinda wanna buy the SUF Civil War).

Fill me in - so the TD-Y is a reissue of the old chandler tube driver?

They'd be recreations of a BK Butler TD more than anything, since their specific aim is the Gilmour Tube Driver tones.

From their site-

What is it?

The PastFx TD-Y is a faithful reproduction of the now discontinued Buffalo FX TD-X Equaliser and Gain Booster pedal, which itself was inspired by a popular valve-powered overdrive favoured by several notable rock artists during the 1980s and ‘90s. The TD-Y has been produced in a smaller, pedalboard-friendly enclosure, and made with the same careful attention to detail and high-quality components as the pedal upon which it is based. It is a highly tweakable and useful tone sculpting tool that can be set to act as a potent equaliser, a clean or dirty boost, or as a satisfyingly rich and complex overdrive. There is plenty of headroom on tap to allow players to generate great tones from the pedal alone or by using it to push their amplifiers over the top. The PastFx TD-Y can go from beautiful, blooming low gain creaminess all the way up to medium gain distortion and early British amp characteristics, especially working in tandem with an amplifier’s character and playing environment.

Specs:

  • Controls for Gain, Level, Bass, Mids and Treble to shape the sonic character of the effect.
  • True bypass operation.
  • New external 3 way toggle switch to select symmetrical V1 (factory default) or new V2 clipping option
and a middle position, which removes diode clipping, resulting in less compression and a slight volume boost.
  • New Push Button switch. When depressed, the mids control is removed from the pedal and the circuit returns to the original V1 4 knob design.
  • Dimmable LED, internally adjustable.
  • Requires a 9vDC centre negative tip power supply, drawing only 5.5 mA current.
  • Dimensions: 112 x 60 x 31mm / 4.4" x 2.36" x 1.22" (enclosure only)
  • Input impedance: 1 MΩ
  • Neutrik Instrument jacks, with audiophile grade parts sourced from MMK, Wima, Epcos, Vishay, Panasonic, Nichicon, etc., just like its predecessor.
