Picked this guy up from GC yesterday. I’ve been wanting another Gretsch of sorts for a bit and this one popped for a good price. It’s a G6118, made in Japan. My son has been telling me for a while that I need a “Martin Gore” guitar as Depeche Mode is his favorite band and he’s seen Martin playing guitars very similar these in their music videos (Martin’s have Hi Lo trons but I digress).

Anyway, picked it up during lunch and it was way cleaner than expected. The switches were a little stiff so I sprayed some deoxit in the barrels and worked that back and forth and that helped a lot with those. HS Filter’trons are excellent. Sound more full spectrum than the Blacktop Filter’trons on my G5422. Unbound ebony board with thumbnail inlays looks super sharp. Plays great too. Space control bridge is floating so only held by string tension but I can work with it for intimating. If I decide I need something more precise there’s options.

Pics!

Very nice! Gretsch are so not my aesthetic but they look cool af in their own way and everyone I have randomly picked up in my guitar store travels has been a blast to play \m/ Congrats GM!

Awesome, congrats! :beer Really love the tones of these.
My old bandmate buddy had one exactly like that. I loved it, and I should have bought it years later when he was selling some gear! :facepalm
A nice Gretsch is still on my want list.

Buying Gretsches and Telecasters are a sign of aging, like wrinkles and lines on our face and hands.

Love it! Even if they are like hugging a Bear at times. Have fun!!

Oh, and please no Chris Isaak licks. :hmm

:rofl

A few days in with it and I love it. The unbound ebony fretboard with the thumbnail inlays looks classy. They also make great side markers without the binding there. The pickups sound gorgeous. Seriously some of the best clean sounds I’ve ever heard. Through my Vibrolux it’s that big beautiful Gretsch clean sound. Soak it in verb and add some tremolo for fun. Sounds great on other amps with some light to medium crunch too. Just gotta watch the volume and position of the hollowbody but that’s nothing new to me. That kind of feedback can be stupid fun.

The only thing I’m missing on this one is a Bigsby but I’d rather not mod it for that. Plus my 5422 has a B60 on it which is pretty workable. That said… the HS Filter’trons in the 6118 have a tad less top end but a more pleasing and complex midrange than the Blacktops. I don’t want to change the HS Filters out (they’re fantastic) but it may be time to pull the trigger on some TV Jones for the 5422. FWIW the Blacktops have been good to me for years but 7 years in with this one, an upgrade won’t hurt.

Fuckin thing rules; I love Japanese Gretschs

To this day a particular MIJ Brian Setzer Hot Rod is still one of the nicest guitars I've ever played

Dude I would LOVE a Setzer Hot Rod. Pickups, selector and 1 volume. And gorgeous sparkle finishes. Gretsch does the best sparkle finishes. That antifreeze green color would be #1 on my list.

That is a weird-ass color that I'd never think of buying... and I absolutely love it!

It’s so not the usual but I love it. Gretsch had been known to do some cool two tone finishes over the years and this is no exception. They had a copper top one with desert sand back local to me but my son insisted I order this one because it had to be the same color as Martin Gore’s. And I’m glad I did because it’s very unique finish. My 5422TG has a cool two tone finish also. White sparkle top with candy apple red back and sides. Reminds me of an old 50s Corvette.
