NGD - a bit of an odd one

Local dealer got this in and I decided to go check it out. It was really tugging at me so I figured I’d gift myself an early B-day present which is a couple weeks away.

I’ve always had a soft spot for a “mutt” like this with a P90 in the neck and a humbucker in the bridge. Ever since the ‘BFG’ Les Paul that Gibson came out with in 2007 I believe.

I told myself I wasn’t going to get a relic but this is subtle enough that it doesn’t bother me. Light Aged. Just enough that I’ll never worry about the “first ding”.

R0 with a ‘V2’ spec neck. Definitely thinner than R9 but still comfy. I was apprehensive at first but actually really liked it after demoing it for 20 minutes in the amp room.

I really dug the top and I’m a sucker for lemon bursts. It’s right at 9.0 lbs.

The bridge pickup just screams. Nice squawk or honk to it. Just sounds vintagey and hot to my ear. The P90 is sweet and jangley. And then middle position is best described as rich and smokey. Really nice. I usually don’t dig the middle position on HH guitars. But I do like the middle on my 3pu Custom (bridge+middle). This is similar but thicker.

Played it for over an hour when I got home. Sounded amazing through a Silver Jubilee!!

That looks great!

Also, I feel like the Gibson BFGs were just released at the wrong time. It was the peak of "Les Pauls should be as traditional as possible" sentiment from guitar players and the BFG was anything but. I think it would sell better today.

That’s sick!!!

I need to play a guitar with P90’s. I don’t know how I’ve got 32 years without doing so and can see myself finding a nice Greco or Burny with them and pulling the trigger on an impulse.

You can’t go wrong with those, though I will point out the 2020+ Gibson Les Paul Specials are popping up in that $1100-1200 range where they are hard to ignore if you’re looking for a P90 LP vibe. I bought a TV yellow one last year that quickly climbed to the top of my guitar heap.

See if you can find a used Gibson LP Special (preferably in TV yellow from 2022 onwards for the nicer finish). Those p90s are superb

Didn't read that reply before mine! Haha. Spot on. I picked up a 2023 here for £1049 in mint condition and my number one now by miles.
