New Hardware Day (NHD) for my Carvin Bolt

My Carvin Bolt had Bill Lawrence pickups (L200N, L200M, L280SL) which I had grown tired of, a Super-vee BladeRunner tremolo which was pretty stiff feeling, scratchy pots, a noisy pickup switch that I had to mess to much to get it to make good contact and a nut that was pinging. So I wanted to strip all that out.

How it started:

The first thing I replaced was the bridge. Vega-Trem bridges are the new hotness so I wanted to give them a try, I got a VT-1

And oh-yeah the feel is much much better than the BladeRunner - it looks a little odd with that routing though (Originally it came with a Wilkinson tremolo) but can't argue with the feel.

For the pickups I ended up with Fender Pure Vintage 65' pickup set as I liked a demo I heard online.

For the pots I got some CTS 10% 250K Ohm pots from Stewmac
I also opted to go with plastic number knobs instead of the metal gold dome knobs.
I got rid of the mini switch (used to bring the bridge pickup on regardless of pickup switch position) and opted for the traditional one volume, two tone setup.

At first I thought about saving the original switch, so I gave it a got deoxing

But the switch just was a goner - so I went with a Kaish 5-way switch I found on Amazon - way more solid feeling that whatever I previously had in there (from Carvin)

I had to do some drilling to make the pot holes bigger for the bigger shaft of the CTS pots.
I also had to countersink the screw holes for the pickup screws as the original ones where standard round heads and the new pickup set had oval heads.

For the nut, I measured the existing nut with a caliper and found the closest GraphTech replacement . It still needed a lot of patience, sanding a bit at a time (width, height, thickness) to get it to fit just perfectly.

Here's the result

I still want to do something about that bridge cavity routing - not sure what though.

And here's a demo of what the new pickups sound like:

I have a John Mayer Strat that is my "hardware experimentation" guitar and I've had several different trems on there (original Fender, StepMax, & TremKing). I've had a Bladerunner on there for a while now and I don't like the stiff feel either and was thinking about upgrading to a Vega-Trem. Not sure whether I want to go with the VT1 Ultra or the new, more affordable VT1 Special (with a brass block). Also, not sure if I would have to pay additional import NO POLITICS. Did you?

Yeah directly from them it's more expensive (I'm in the US) - the VT1 Ultra Gold would be around $350 dollars shipped after conversion - the VT1 Special about $235.

I got this VT1 Ultra gold from a Reverb shop new - for around $280 ($289 at Amazon)

I got a new chrome one for another guitar (which will also replace the BladeRunner on that guitar)) from Amazon for about $260.

Thanks, I'll check out Reverb & Amazon. How do you like the Vega-Trem so far compared to the Wilkinson for example?

It's been more than a decade that I had the Wilkinson - so I can't remember now. But compared to the BladeRunner, it's just much more smoother, not stiff at all, feels great.

The bridge itself is like a big knife edge that then pivots on the plate (the plate is what you screw to the body) and just held by string tension - so return to zero is consistent, no catch, just smooth.

As for the minor annoyances:
  • It is a little more fiddly during string changes since the bridge itself is just held by string tension (and well the springs) it easily falls into the cavity (well at least in this guitar) once you get the strings slack. You also have to center and align the strings to the fretboard every time you change the strings.
  • The saddle height screws protrude from the saddles so you may feel them during palm mutes.

Some very cool mods! Are you more happy with the pickup change?

I am a big fan of the BladeRunner and love how well it works with a vintage aesthetic. I have mine setup floating with a whole step available when pulled. It's been super stable and incredibly reliable for me.

I've never had an issue with the feel, but I can see where some may prefer the feel of a typical 2 post knife edge design. It looks like the Vega uses a similar design as the BladeRunner. How would you describe the difference in feel?

Regardless, the Carvin looks great and congrats on your customization adventure. Enjoy!

I was too, that's why I had them on two guitars - aesthetically looks great. And I did use them for a few years (went down to two springs to minimize the stiff feel for me).

Looks great in that axe.

Well the major difference is the Bladerunner uses a steel plate to keep the plate and the bridge attached and as the pivot point.

The VegaTrem is not attached at all, it rests on two knife edges similar to a floyd.

How would you describe the difference in feel?
I would say - more responsive, less stiff feel, feels like more range of motion as well.

Regardless, the Carvin looks great and congrats on your customization adventure. Enjoy!

Thanks man!
