New ‘Modded’ Marshalls

Totally killer amps. The most Marshall of all Mesas, in my experience. Which is why so many people
ended up kind of hating them and they didn't last all that long in production. Been a theme for Boogie
when it comes to nailing the exact Mesa British recipe. :popcorn
Where does the Royal Atlantic rate in terms of the "British/Marshall" sound? I thought that was the Mesa amp that hit that mark the closest. I did play a Stiletto a few times, but it left me wanting more.

The Stilletto also seemed to have 15 revisions during it's short run and that made it super confusing to pick one and be happy with it. Is it the duce the trident the ace the V2? I don't even know if I got that right. Too many iterations of the same thing.

Yeah, I can't even remember which one I played. It was a 100 watt head, I think. Maybe a Duece...?

Yeah I think there was 50, 100 and 150 watt (ace, deuce, trident) versions. I do think there was a V2 as well for each of these? So searching for info on model differences and used ones that come up just make it easy to keep walking past them.

They said the JCM900 didn't replace the JCM800, but I could've sworn the reason I bought my 900 (which was when they first came out; it was so new that they didn't even have the JCM900 cabs yet, which I believe were stereo, so mine came with a JCM800, 4x12 cab), was because the 800's were done.

I didn't know anything about Marshall's at the time, other than my other guitarist had just gotten a Super Lead, it sounded ungodly amazing, so I wanted one too!

Swear the modded Marshall that everyone wants is a Plexi/Jose style circuit on one side and JCM800 (with more available gain) on the other? All in the same amp rather than having several single channel beasts.

LND150 FX loop, global and channel master volumes, switchable diode clipping, MAYBE a basic clean. Get that to under £2300 and it’s a winner.

Friedman is arguably closer in a lot of ways with the Smallbox, BE, JEL100, and even to an extent Twin Sister. JEL is probably the closest to modded 800+plexi in the same box. You’d hope Marshall could do one better and build it for less.

Up until the later Marks though (maybe the IV, but definitely the V, and beyond), all those old amps you need a freaking spreadsheet (where's Stone? Lol) to keep straight. At least in my mind. Heck I still can't remember what DRG, etc. means. :rofl

And then there's all the Recto revisions. Which I still say screw em all; just get a 100 watt MW and be done with it. I've never heard any of those early variants sound noticeably better than my MW. And the MW is vastly more versatile. But I digress...

Yeah I never even pulled the DRG and other Mark differentiator acronyms into my brain. Too dumb and too much $ for me for most of my life to even worry about it. I'm already set on the MW side of things :satan With any luck; I should have some good V30s to use with it by weekend's end

Anyone (by which I mean @James Freeman or @santiall or @FractalAudio ) able to suss out what the mods are doing? probably too hard to tell specific values but should be possible to see what’s being affected in the circuit?

Just checking the modded 1959, seems nicely dialled in for what it is. Pre tonestack master volume is cool, I prefer it to PPIMV.

I just wish they went a little more adventurous with the mods, a switchable gain stage in front, LND150, depth and a clean channel would have been awesome. Cool for what it is, even though I prefer 800 based amps I like the look of the modded 1959 here a little more. Nicer looking guts too.

are you sure? I’d have thought they are swapping cathode bypass cap values.
Yes I'm sure. Look at the amps. Listen to the demos where they explain the mods. No added tube gain stages in either the 1959HW or the 2203x. Could there be some other cap values engaged? Maybe. They are definitely engaging Diodes or Transistors regardless.

Read Marshall's descriptions.

Trust me, if there was an added tube gain stage in either of these, they would be marketing the hell out of that.
