I had to scramble to the airport over the weekend and have been basically living in the Lincoln, Nebraska ICU with my step father all week as he transitions into hospice with metastatic cancer. While this is terribly difficult, I can’t help but find inspiration in the empathy, passion, and patience exhibited by every single individual I interact with here.

He’s dropped a dozen cups of water, 2 bowls of broth, and shit and pissed on just about everyone at this point, and they remain relentless in keeping him comfortable, relaxed, and pain free. They never falter, they never crack their demeanor.

In a world where folks seem to inflict countless tragedies on one another, I’m truly thankful that these people exist. They deserve more than they are getting.

Cheers to that, :beer

That definitely takes a certain personality type to stick with it, a very nurturing and patient one. I’ve known a couple who thought they wanted to do it but couldn’t hang with the reality of it, same goes for a couple vet techs.

Good luck with the stepdad, man, he’ll be in my thoughts.
