I'm on the lookout for a Tele and wanted to check out some pedals so I ran up to one of my local GC's today. I saw on the website they had a 5153 4x12 in white for $269 and figured it was a mistake, even used that's a dirt cheap price. When I first walked in I saw a used 5153 4x12 right at the front of the store for $600 and assumed I was right, it was a mistake online. Played some guitars and then saw the pile of used amps towards the back and there's another white 4x12, for $269! (Not the Iconic, but they probably thought it was). I don't need it, but was going to buy it on principle and because it'd be nice to have the matching cab for my head.
I still had some stuff to check out so wandered around a bit and 15 mins later I see this kid, 13 or 14 looking at the 4x12, checking his phone and the gleam in his eye starting to grow. There was also a white 50-watt 6L6 head on it for $720. I see him run off and come back with his dad, who looks like a musician or at least someone I'd probably get along with. I'm playing a guitar a couple feet from them and hear the dad say "That does look like a good price, but we can probably find it cheaper online if it costs that much here. And this is a lot of amp, I don't know if you can even play this in the house" and the kid is giving the dad every reason he wants it, like I used to do with my dad.
I put the guitar down, walk up to them and said "Hey, I'm actually going to buy that cabinet if you guys don't. It's a stupid good price on it and I think they believe it's the budget version but it's definitely not. I have the same head at home already and you can definitely play it in an apartment without an issue, I do it almost daily. I'm going to look at some guitars but I figured I'd give you fair warning now, I was planning on buying it, I'd just rather not get in the way of little dude's first 4x12"
The dad said "Oh, thank you, that's really cool of you!" and the kid was just staring at his dad, hoping this new information was going to sway him. It must have because when I went back to see if it was there 10 minutes later, the head and cab were both gone!
I managed to get out of that store without buying anything and I wanted to buy almost everything I put my hands on today; three different Spector basses, one fucking amazing Stirling Stingray that absolutely blew my mind, a non-piezo Zach Meyers SE (holy shit that was killer), a Les Paul Special (first time I ever played one, WOW!), and a handful of pedals. It's bonus month and I'm making a list!
