Ugh, this sucks and I’m heartbroken.
I was supposed to spend the summer playing a production of Rock of Ages. I’ve been looking forward to it for months; I cleared my calendar and everything.
The MD is a good old friend of mine. Last week I asked him to confirm the dates for the first rehearsals and I was told the production company hired a different guitarist…
Typically when a production company does a show they hire a director and a music director, then the MD hires the musicians they want to use for the show. What happened here is, since the musicians for this show are characters on stage, the director decided they were within her purview instead of the MDs and she hired them herself without even telling the MD
So the MD had told me he was going to hire me for the show but then when he spoke to the director she told him she had already hired all the musicians and he had no say in it.
This is NOT the way this works and the MD is furious, but the director is also the head of the production company with the contract, so she can do whatever she wants and he has no say.
So I’m out.
And everyone has already staffed all their summer shows so it looks like I’m going to have no gigs from June - August
