Let’s talk power supplies

I paid $369.00 (plus tax, of course) for my DC7 + 8 set, but that was back in November of 2021. Wow, they've really crept up in price recently!

Generally, If I'm powering mainly just a bunch of 9 volt pedals, my first choice is usually a Pedal Power 3 Plus, because of the 12 available isolated outlets. You can also add 4 or 8 port expansion boxes to those, using a 24-volt pass-through cable, and share the same IEC input cable to power both.

Voodoo power supplies have been around forever and seem to be built to withstand World War 3. Not surprised their power supplies are still on so many thousands of guitarists' boards.

Voodoo's customer service is absolutely stellar, as well. But then, so is that of Walrus Audio. They really deliver.

One of many things I love about the CIOKS DC Series units is the ability to use them with the GRIP mounting brackets, which allow for drill-free installation. If you're someone who likes to experiment with power supply placement, or you just want to bounce a supply from one board to another, you can do this without having to drill a single hole in your boards.

Also the bracket does double duty as a heat transfer mechanism - but I must admit, the DC7 units don't seem to heat up that much, even when powering up multiple high-current pedals.

The USB out on the DC7s can power a smart device, or even some pedalboard lights, like The Bright Switch, by Rock Stock Pedals.

The kit comes with a single LED/goose neck lamp and a 2 Amp power supply.

I actually didn’t know the DC7 had a 5V USB outlet, that’s pretty cool!

I was planning to put one of these USB powered page turners on my board so that will be really useful

I'm very happy with my Warwick RockBoard ISO Power Block V6. It's quiet and small and gives my gain pedals a new bite.

I'll buy a second one when I have the money and place them under a Rockboard Quad 4.4.

I had a bit of GAS for a PT Terra 42 lately, but then again it's YUUUGE and might not be too practical, since I prefer setting up my dual-board rig in a slight askew fashion.

BUT: now I can't get the Cioks Superpower Bundle out of my head anymore. Did all the math (red flag for severe GAS) and it would fit like a T.

What else, if I have no more pedals in the "urgent" bracket on the wishlist in the deepest corners of my brain...?

Thanks to this thread, I guess. 😂

EDIT: Well, that escalated quickly. Just ordered the 8 Expander, because I know a good deal when I see a good deal. Right? Riiiiight?????
Will buy a DC7 separately/locally once it arrives.

I have a Pedal Power 3 landing tomorrow. I decided to put my Halo and Hydra on my board. I then realized that my Pedal Power 2 doesn't deliver enough current to power them. DOH!

This is gonna be fun!

An 8 Expander should arrive later today - bought them separately due to a nice deal that was a bit cheaper than their Superpower Bundle.

Finally, a good reason to clear the boards and remove all the dog hair. 😁

Also, flat enough to put on there and not having to remove the (riveted) brackets.

What board did you go with in the end?

Update: it's actually INSANE how much quieter everything got with the Cioks. 🥳

Expensive, but worth it, imho.

Setup was somewhat unusual, yet worked like it should and feels way sturdier than before, brick shithouse style

Running 16 pedals with the DC7 and 8 Expander, the power load is around 40%, so there's still a good bunch of headroom left.

I used isolated PSUs before (Palmer and Harley Benton). They were decent enough, the Cioks beats them out of the water easily though, with ease!

Feels very "next level". Yay!

Congrats! I’ve been very happy with mine as well. It’s so nice knowing I’ll be able to easily power anything I need.

Before I used to have to check power requirements and there were some pedals I couldn’t use because I didn’t have the right power.

My whole board is nice and quiet

I tore my office board down today, added a Truetone CS7 (it already has a CS12) because I have roughly about 2300mA of power needs. The CS12 can handle it, but I wanted to use two so there wasn't such a heavy load on one of them.

The pedals are as follows: EMG ES-918 (batteries, but I may try powering it with the CS7 and see how it does) -> Peterson Strobostomp HD tuner -> Dunlop Cry Baby Mini -> Boss GT-1000 Core -> Boss SDE-3000D Digital Delay -> Boss RE-2 Space Echo -> Fryette PS-2A. I am also using a Morningstar MC8 for controlling things.

GT-1000 Core FX Loop 1: Lovepedal Amp Eleven Big Box -> Friedman IR-D (12v, 500mA)
GT-1000 Core FX Loop 2: Syngery Syn-2 (x2; OS modules)

CS7: 600mA
CS12: 1450mA

When using the Friedman IR-D on the CS12, it wanted to power up at 9v, 800mA or the GT-1000 Core and MC8 would act up. When moved to the CS7, it would produce a strange sound and needed to be set to 12v, which only requires 500mA vs the 800mA required at 9v, hence the 300mA difference.

A comment mentioned how quiet it was using the Cioks power supply. While I've not tried a Cioks, I was surprised by how much better my setup sounded when I switched to the Truetone CS12 and CS7 with my rigs versus the power supply setup I had previously (Onespot and another power brick).

That's really cool, because these seem to be "heavy lift" power requirements you got there. Congrats! 😎

Yes, Cioks actually introduced me to a whole new level of quietness, so much that I revisited most of my "too noisy, still keep" category drives, e.g. SD-1, Dumbloid ODS, FLB Skeleton Key, Fulltone FB1, MXR Diavolo, Demonfx Gladiator, Warm Bender, to name a few real gems.

Which is why the Tru-Fi Super Fuzz earned its way back on board, bumping off the EQD Fuzz Master General. No offense to EQD, but the Tru-Fi sounds "bigger" by a tiny margin - maybe because it's a faithful recreation of the OG Univox.

Anyhow, I feel like I've been brainwashed by Cioks, but it feels nice. Come and buy them, help your pedals sound their best, and help yourself to enter the church of GAME CHANGER power supplies.

Praise Poul Cioks!!! 😂😂😂
