Up to, and including the massive 1973 tour, Zeppelin looked like this on stage.

Then starting with the 1975 tour....

And 1977.....

For a band that relied heavily on long improv jams and tight changes it easy to see how
the proximity of the musicians to one another may have contributed to some of the later
sloppiness as much as the higher drug intake??????

That seems plausible. Big stages and separation = inherent latency. The 1 ends up different for everyone.

I was watching the dude who runs FOH for The Rolling Stones and with their stage setup they are using
120 wedges. He said they need them everywhere and try to cover the entire stage and various catwalks
so wherever the guys move they can stay mostly locked in.

I think the biggest issue was the proximity between Page and Bonham's kit. You watch all the earlier stuff and Page would always drift over come jam/solo time so he'd be right in front of the bass drum.

As soon as he's starts the lead he moves right over.

Not only was he getting too buzzed on the later tours but he'd lost his immediate anchor.

IMO.

If I knew how to annotate memes, I'd make one from the Sopranos episode where Defiler was recording, and the engineer goes, "Where are the choruses", but instead, "WHERE ARE THE MONITORS?"

Yeah, it doesn't quite work when I have to explain it that way. :rofl

"WHERE ARE THE MONITORS?"

Funny, Zep never used multiple front wedges and opted for HUGE side fills instead.
Of course Bonzo got one too. Most photos you can't see the left and right ones.
Again, as the stages got bigger the monitors got so far away it was ridiculous.

We'll never see bands grow through and along with the technology and power
that took place once upon a time. They were adapting and learning along with
everyone else in the time period.

Made the most of what they had access to at the time. Worked out fine near as
I can tell. :idk

RIP Bonzo! :beer

Couldn't be further from the truth.

1979 Knebworth Festival - those 4 guys loved the fact that when they got together they were LED ZEPPELIN.

I was joking somewhat. I'm sure it's like family, you still love them, but you may not want to be around each other every day after a while.

RP and JB did get in a fistfight backstage in Japan in the early 70's. But when they got together they knew magic was being created!!
