Used these on and off over the years but never owned one. Price for this made sense to pounce on, I’ll drop it in to Marshall and get the jacks and switch replaced and give it a once over.

Definitely sounds more solid state than I remember but it does that 90’s Marshall thing really well. Can get useable tones direct but I think its voicing lends itself to additional sweeting from a decent poweramp. So far I’ve been using the DSL, but also Mercuriall’s poweramp sims and they work well.

Any favourite poweramp combinations? Any unexpected cool tones or different uses for it?

JMP-1's utilize solid state distortion for the OD channels, with a single tube gain stage and cathode follower from one tube to warm up the sound. As such they sound ok with the guitar up, but rolling off the guitar's volume does not sound anywhere near as good as a real tube Marshall with the guitar's volume rolled back. Also, like any preamp, JMP-1's sound best with a tube power section/sim and cab/IR.

The clean channels use the other tube's two gain stages for the cleans (so this all tube channel can work well with pedals etc).

Both channels use fixed tone stacks along with the programmable active EQ, which works well.

I used one for a decade back in the day in a rack with a ADA MP-1 and FX.

I haven’t played one IRL, but one of the band I dearly love is Textures (it was an AWESOME Dutch band) and remember them using it in their first record and on tour.

I made a lowball offer on a JMP1 a few weeks back. So many bands I loved in the 90’s were using them. Definitely falls in the “You totally don’t need one, yet you totally need one” category for me.

What power amp are you planning to pair with it? (Or just use the Axe for a digital backend)

What power amp are you planning to pair with it? (Or just use the Axe for a digital backend)

So far I’ve tried it with the DSL 100H, the BE100 works great as a power amp too. I may try the 5150 and even Recto for some variation though. I’ll also try the Fryette at some point.

I’ve never used the AxeFX for poweramp simulation. If i’m going direct, I like either NAM models or Mercuriall poweramps work quite well.

I only ever used one with a Mesa Boogie Simul-Class 2 : Ninety before yet. But this power amp is too powerful for anything I do these days, and I don't need no stereo no more, so I'm looking for a less powerful all tube power amp to pair it with, but not no EL84 amp. Maybe a used Peavey 60 watt mono tube power amp. But good lower powered tube power amp's are hard to find nowadays. Oh well the search goes on.

Yeah I agree that the OD channels on the JMP-1 is not the best. I do really love the clean channels though and those are right up my alley as I usually don't play with a whole lot of gain.

The gain channels have that one full on sound, anything else is lacking like vintage blues rock and blues tones.

The clean channels do not get very hairy at all, though for pure cleans or with pedal(s) they can work well, and the programmable EQ works well too. The analog cab sim is surprisingly good too (for it's vintage etc).

I have two . Picked them up when people were having trouble giving them away.

My first gigging rig was a JMP-1 - TC G Major - BBE Sonic Maximiser into the return of a DSL or Laney VC50 combo. Did a lot of road trips with that rig. Only photo I can find of it lurking in the background here circa 2010?

There's a few things they do pretty well but they don't sound like a 2203 if that's what you're chasing. I distinctly remember plugging straight into the DSL at soundcheck one night and much preferring the tone so the JMP (and BBE) got left behind from that point on.

Yeah, I had mine in a rack with a ADA MP-1 and at first a Sequential Circuits Pro FX (modded with the then brand new MIDI LOL!), an ART SGE, and a Rocktron Intellifex, then later on with just a Axe FX Ultra. I only used the JMP-1 for full on Marshall sounds, with the ADA handling everything else (cleans through high(er) gain).

That said, in stereo via a MosValve or Mesa 20/20 (with the Phat Mod), through a couple of 4X12's those rigs certainly rawk'd!
