A mix is never finished, it’s merely abandoned……and sometimes it’s forcefully removed from the hands of someone who can’t leave well enough alone.
I started playing the intro riff a couple weeks ago after my buddy and I were checking out the Plexi50 w/ the Hot Mod, it was one of those “This isn’t all that interesting but I dig it” riffs so I opened Logic and 20 mins later there was a whole song mapped out using the first ideas that popped in my head for the parts. I hadn’t written in a while and just wanted to get those juices flowing again.
All the distorted guitars are the Plexi50 w/ Hot Mod engaged, the only differences between the tracks are where I had the volume knob on the guitar. The only EQ on the electric tracks is during the verses I sucked some bass out, outside of that, there’s not a single bit of EQ shaping the tones. I added a pinch of compression from SSLChannel on each track, just enough to get them ‘stuck together’ and that’s it. There might be 1dB of 1.5k on the lead to get it standing out. There’s some E-bow tracks throughout the song w/ a shitload of delay on them.
Plexi50>Suhr RL>AxeFX>DynaCabs (probably the 1960TV and Friedman GB, the Dynamic 2 and Ribbon mics)
Only used the Orville and Edwards Les Pauls, with most of it being the Orville.
Acoustic is my Breedlove w/ a 57 pointed at the 15th fret from about 4” away with CLA-Unplugged doing all the shaping/compression. Abbey Roads Plates are on a bus, which is where the acoustic and drums are getting their reverb from.
Drums are Superior Drummer 3 and those are what had me mixing and re-mixing; I didn’t want a modern sounding kit that’s compressed to hell and back on this song. That was my issue in the first (almost perfect mix), the drums sounded great but were too modern sounding with a thumping kick. It’s not where I want it in this mix I posted, but fuck it, I’m sick of this song, my poor dog is sick of this song.
Vocals are my face, an SM7B>CLA-76>CLA-Vocals>FabFilter ProQ3 (H-delay and Logic’s Stereo Delay are on busses and used here and there). I doubled every vocal and I wasn’t going for perfection on purpose, I’m so fucking sick of hearing tuned vocals and robot harmonies in music these days and won’t have any of that shit in my own music.
After 2 weeks of hearing nothing but this damn song, I’m putting my 7-string in A-standard tonight and doing something metal next.
