I threw steel strings on a classical

A classical guitar I once bought used had steel strings on it for around a decade or so before. Everything was fine.
In case the tension isn't too high (which it doesn't seem to be in this case), what should possibly happen? I could only imagine more wear on the tuners.

also it really should sound substantially better with quality nylon strings.

He likes it as is. But very obviously, you are the last person who would ever accept such a thing.
