I hate shimmer reverb

Shimmer always annoyed me because you usually have to play something, then let it ring and wait for the digital sparklies for it to even make sense. I always want my effects to go right along with what I'm playing instead of me essentially doing a duet with them.

Like others have said, I always make it an octave below and keep it subtle if I have to use it at all.

shimmer with more of the low end stuff going on without the high end stuff and tons and tons of gain or fuzz is pretty cool but fuck that p&w U2 shit... that needs to just go away forever. also the mix knob is always going to be your friend, you need way more dry and to lower the wet.

My serious answer is that it's context dependent, as always.

It's just a pitch shifted reverb. It's P&W, sure. It's U2, Brian Eno, Coldplay, sure, in those contexts and in those musical styles. But it's just a texture. It's like mellotron strings. They can be "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head" by BJ Thomas but they can also be Porcupine Tree at their most brilliant... put it on some diminished chords, it can be something evil. Put it on something fragile, use its ethereal nature to contrast and enhance something guttural or driving... imagination matters.

Yeah, I think the first I ever heard the effect was via Lanois and/or Eno. A little goes a long way as they say.

Man, P&W co-opted Shimmer (like many, many other things), and then bastardized it, and
then beat an entire culture over the head with it, in that sickly, sweet, saccharine nonsense
way that only Satan could be at the root of.

I didn't think all you guys listened to P&W. :rofl
That kind of music I've dabbled in or listened to, I've never heard an ounce of shimmer? Maybe there's a different sect of P&W I'm not aware of. :grin

I don’t think I’ve ever heard a P&W song outside of my dad’s shitty church band in the 2000s

I've never played in a church band, although I've played with guys who grew up playing gospel and country. So that's more what I'm used to, old-school gospel with hints of bluegrass and country. New gospel or P&W I'm not as hip to honestly.
